Description

1919-S Half Dollar, MS65
Attractive High-End Registry Coin

1919-S 50C MS65 PCGS. The end of World War I in November of 1918 and the massive silver melting from the Pittman act presented a challenging landscape for the Mint in 1919. The Walking Liberty half dollar, still in its infancy, had become the largest denomination of hard silver in production. While just under 20.8 million half dollars were struck in 1918, the Mint reduced half dollar production to just under 3.7 million pieces in 1919, with San Francisco striking the lion's share of 1.552 million coins. Per standard practice in the West, most of the issue was released into circulation, and it is challenging in Mint State and conditionally rare over MS65.

This branch mint Gem displays mostly brilliant light-ivory surfaces illuminated on soft, satiny luster. Subliminal shades of steel-blue, lilac and lime toning are released during rotation for exceptional overall eye appeal. Generally well-struck for the issue, the devices show typical softness on Liberty's head and branch arm. Light field abrasions are grade-consistent with none seen as bothersome. PCGS reports only 13 numerically finer pieces, offering collectors an attractive opportunity for date and mintmark sets (11/25).(Registry values: N4719)
