Description

1920-S Walking Liberty Half, MS66
A Superlative Example and One of the Finest Known

1920-S 50C MS66 NGC. The 1920-S is deceptively unavailable in the better grades of Uncirculated, especially in light of its mintage of 4.6 million pieces. This issue has several stumbling blocks that stand in the way of a coin that grades MS66. Abrasions are usually generous on most 1920-S halves, thus preventing most from grading higher than MS63. Strike is also a consideration with most pieces. However, one uniformly strong quality seen on these coins is the superlative luster. This piece exhibits the sparkling mint frost expected and each side is just slightly toned. The strike is only a bit weak on the head of Liberty, the upper skirt lines, and the trailing leg of the eagle. The surfaces overall are magnificent. Only two coins have been certified finer, and combining the MS66 examples from both services a mere 13 total coins have been certified.(Registry values: N7079)
