Description

1921-D Walking Liberty Half Dollar, MS65+
Lowest Mintage of the Series
A Registry Set Essential

1921-D 50C MS65+ PCGS. CAC. Save for the '19-D and '19-S, the trio of 1921 issues are the most challenging Walking Liberty halves to acquire in high grade, particularly at the Gem level. The 1921-S is slightly rarer than its Denver counterpart in MS65, but the '21-D boasts the lower mintage (208,000 coins) and is equally as sought-after. In general, any of the key-date Walking Liberty half dollars in Gem or better condition is worthy of a headline in a numismatic auction, due to the extensive array of collectors that pursue this series in every capacity from circulated coin board sets to high-ranking Registry Sets.

It is the Registry Set collectors that will be most interested in the present coin, a rare Plus-graded Gem example of the 1921-D. Some duplication is believed to exist in the certified population reports for MS65 coins, and we have personally handled several pieces that have changed holders at least once to our knowledge. Rather than glancing at the PCGS and NGC census figures for a rarity estimate, one would be better served by studying auction data to learn just how infrequently high-end examples of this issue appear on the market. The active demand for high-end examples of this issue was fully represented in the recent sale of an MS66 PCGS coin in the FUN Signature sale (Heritage, 1/2018), which realized $168,000 -- a price record for the 1921-D that surpassed the previous record by more than $70,000.

On the PCGS Set Registry, there are currently 128 collectors pursuing this series in a date and mintmark capacity, but three of the top five sets do not represent the 1921-D in Gem or finer condition. It is not just the cost that makes such a coin difficult to acquire, it is the rarity. This Plus-graded MS65 coin represents one of the most important acquisition opportunities that the Walking Liberty half dollar Registry Set collector will ever encounter. The coin is boldly defined in most areas. Although Liberty's branch hand is not fully delineated, there is distinct separation between her thumb and fingers, and much interior detail shows on her head and the eagle's trailing leg. The well-preserved brilliant surfaces radiate vibrant mint luster on both sides, creating outstanding eye appeal. Population: 34 in 65 (3 in 65+), 3 finer. CAC: 12 in 65, 2 finer (2/18).(Registry values: N4719)
