1944-S Quarter, MS68, One of Three at PCGS
With Doubled Die Reverse
1944-S 25C MS68 PCGS. CONECA DDR-001. Knob S. This coin in
its previous appearance with us was unlisted in the
Cherrypickers' Guide, fourth edition, volume II, and we
hoped it might be in the new fifth edition, volume II, but it is
not. It certainly deserves to be; the reverse die doubling is
impressive, seen as extreme thickness on all peripheral letters, a
sort of Art Deco effect. This piece is, in addition, one of only
three examples of the 1944-S in this top grade at PCGS, as it was
three years ago in its last offering (3/12). The borders are
beautifully toned in bands of orange-red, sky-blue, and lemon-gold,
leaving a window of brilliance at the centers.Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2010), lot 2691, which realized $14,950.
