Description

Rare, High Grade 1950-D/S Quarter, MS66

1950-D/S 25C MS66 PCGS. CAC. FS-601, formerly FS-021. Traces of an S mintmark are present above and northwest of the Denver mintmark. Two major mintmark varieties are known for the 1950 quarters, the D over S and the S over D. Both are rare in high grades and the D over S variety is seen less frequently compared to the S over D.
In 1950 the Philadelphia Mint received an order for dies from one of the branch mints, and being one die shy of filling the order, a workman overpunched the mintmark to fill the order. Then at an unknown later date, the exact opposite took place.
This remarkable Premium Gem has fully original, brilliant, and highly lustrous silver surfaces with splashes of light gold toning on the right side of the obverse. Population: 4 in 66, 1 finer (8/09).(Registry values: N991)
