Description

1964 SMS Quarter Dollar, SP66
Special Strike Rarity

1964 25C SMS SP66 PCGS. A small number of five-coin 1964 cent through half dollar sets surfaced in the early 1990s, featuring a satiny finish and significantly sharper strikes than the regular issues of that year. No official Special Mint Sets were issued in 1964, and the coins that surfaced in the 1990s are not known to have been distributed in any special packaging. However, their striking characteristics earn an SMS designation from PCGS. This Premium Gem example of the quarter dollar displays a delicate tinge of pastel color over bold design elements and satiny fields. The certified population totals are likely inflated by resubmissions. We have not handled an SMS 1964 Washington quarter since the ANA Signature (Heritage, 3/2011), lot 3623. Population: 12 in 66, 14 finer (3/19).
From a complete five-piece set of 1964 SMS coinage, cent through half dollar, offered in this sale as individual lots.(Registry values: P1)
