1965 Quarter, Choice AU
On a 90% Silver Planchet
1965 25C Washington Quarter -- Struck on a 90% Silver Planchet
-- AU55 NGC. Breen-4416, "extremely rare." 6.13 gm. During
1965, 90% silver quarters were struck bearing 1964 dates, while
quarters in the newly introduced clad composition were dated 1965.
Given the enormous mintages of both issues, it was inevitable that
some silver quarter planchets ended up struck with 1965 dates, a
transitional alloy error similar to the famous 1943 copper cents.
This lightly circulated pearl-gray example is attractive despite a
few thin field marks near the profile.
