Description

(1805) Eccleston Bronze Medal, SP64
Baker-85, GW-88; Secret Marks
From the Baker Collection

(1805) Eccleston Medal. Bronze, Baker-85, GW-88, SP64 PCGS. This example shows "Eccleston's Secret Marks" that are also found on several other examples. The tiny punch marks are located next to the designer's name on the obverse, in the exergue below the Indian on the reverse, and next to the Indian's right (facing) arm. Several bronze medals and all known fire-gilt examples have identical marks in the same location. With one medal presented directly to Thomas Jefferson and still at Monticello today, the conclusion that Eccleston personally marked these pieces is sound. This Choice Mint State example features exceptional mahogany surfaces with reflective fields. All of the design elements are bold. This is a late die state piece with a curved die crack right of the standing Indian.
Ex: William Spohn Baker (bequeathed 11/15/1897); Historical Society of Pennsylvania (Stack's Bowers, 11/2019), lot 20076.
