1805 George Washington Eccleston Medal, R.6. Baker-85. Bronze, 76 mm. Obverse armored bust right, WEBB on truncation (dies by Thomas Webb). Around GENERAL WASHINGTON / INSCRIBED TO HIS MEMORY BY D: ECCLESTON. LANCASTER MDCCCV. Reverse standing Indian, THE LAND WAS OURS / HE LAID THE FOUNDATION OF AMERICAN LIBERTY IN THE XVIII CENTURY. / INNUMERABLE MILLIONS YET UNBORN WILL VENERATE THE MEMORY --. / OF THE MAN WHO OBTAINED THEIR COUNTRY'S FREEDOM. Fine/VF with numerous rim bumps, but still a desirable example of this rare medal, with all legends readable, if faint.
The 1985 Medallic Portraits of Washington comments that "the medal appears to be more of a commentary on the expropriation by colonists of Indian lands than a tribute to Washington."
