Description

Rare Uncirculated Washington
'Reverse' Medal, Baker-240C

R.7 Uncirculated Washington "Reverse" (Lincoln) Medal. King-856, Baker-240C. White metal, plain edge, 28 mm, R.7. Obverse bust of Washington facing right, GEORGE at left, WASHINGTON at right, FIRST IN WAR / FIRST IN PEACE -- / AND FIRST IN / THE HEARTS / OF HIS COUNTRYMEN. Reverse head of Lincoln facing left, REVERSE above, LINCOLN below, 13 stars at sides. This lustrous and rare piece is lightly hairlined from cleaning and shows a few minor contact marks, but still retains significant appeal.
Although the reason for the REVERSE inscription is unclear, the Rulau-Fuld Medallic Portraits of Washington, centennial edition (1985), notes that Bowers believes that the inscription is merely the result of miscommunication--the die-engraver following a designer's sketches and believing that the "reverse" notation was part of the design.
