1824 Sir Walter Scott Bronze Medal by Wyon

1824 Sir Walter Scott Medal. BHM-1238. Bronze, 54.1 mm, 65 gm. Dies by William Wyon under the direction of Thomason. Sir Walter Scott (1771-1832) was a popular Scottish novelist and poet. Obverse: bust of Scott facing right with date at 6 o'clock. Signed by Wyon in truncation. Reverse: Allegorical scene with a seated figure of History holding a tablet with the inscription WAV, short for Waverley, one of Scott's more recognized works. A standing figure of Fiction raises her wand while History looks up to her for guidance. The legend around reads TRUTH SEVERE IN FAIRY FICTION DRESSED, a quote Scott used in defense of his writing about history in the prose fiction style. A closed wreath in exergue with a tiny inscription below reading PUBLISHED BY THOMASON. Glossy chocolate-brown surfaces with strong doubling noted on Fiction's face and right arm. An inoffensive scratch is well concealed on the reverse, extending from the tablet and connecting the shoulders of both figures.
