Description
1914 German Silver Naval Medal. XF. On September 22, 1914, in the North Sea, the German submarine U-9 attacked and sunk three British ships, the Aboukir, the Hogue, and the Cressy, taking the lives of more than 1,400 sailors. This German medal marks the event, and the commander of the U-9, Otto Weddigen. Less than six months later, while commanding another submarine, the U-29, Weddigen and his entire crew perished when their craft was sunk by a British battleship.Auction Info
