Description

Intricately Engraved Shilling Honoring Henry VI

Engraved Shilling Honoring Henry VI. Silver, 27 mm, 2.2 gm. A hand engraved silver piece honoring the life of King Henry VI. One side features the crowned king standing with an oval banner containing the following legend: 21 MAII 1471 HENRICVS 6 REX OBIIT, or "Henry VI died on May 21, 1471." Two lions--one on each side--are scaling the banner. The opposite side, which is in medal flip orientation, displays the Royal Coat of Arms of England with RAINED [sic] 8 YEARS BURIED AT WINDSOR filling the periphery. The "3" appears to have worn away from the "38" in the legend, as only the "8" is visible. Henry VI, who became King of England at the age of eight months, occupied the throne for 38 years and six months, until he was imprisoned in 1461 and succeeded by his cousin, King Edward IV. This fascinating piece is unique in the sense that it is hand-engraved and, although we cannot declare with certainty, it appears to be a circa 1700s creation. A small hole at the king's feet is actually a natural planchet void and was not intentionally made.
