Description

Richard Wagner Plaque in Bronze. Grunthal-2. Bronze, uniface, 115 mm, high relief. Bust of the German opera composer Richard Wagner made ca. 1876. Signed A. SCHARFF below bust truncation, and signed in script in the right obverse field by the composer himself. According to Grunthal, "This plaque is apparently a cast from the original in wax." The year 1876 was a particularly significant one in the life of the composer, marking the first performance at the Bayreuth Festival of Das Rheingold, the operatic prologue to the trilogy of operas--Die Walküre, Siegfried, and Götterdämmerung--that conclude the Der Ring des Nibelungen tetralogy. Plaque is Extremely Fine.
