Description

Circa 1791 Jean-Jacques Rousseau Token, Soho Mint

(1791) Jean-Jacques Rousseau Token. Hennin-307. Bronze, 35.1 mm, 23.9 gm. Dies by Rambert Dumarest. Struck at Boulton's Soho Mint in England circa 1791. This medal was part of the Monneron brothers' "Great Men of France" series. Jean-Jacques Rousseau was a noted Swiss philosopher. Edge inscription: SE VEND A PARIS CHEZ MONNERON (PATENTÉ) "sold in Paris at Monneron's (patented)." The current piece is an original, as distinguished from the later Soho plain edge restrikes by the aforementioned edge lettering. The Monneron brothers operated a banking house in Paris and issued this and other tokens under the same premise as their contemporary British trade token counterparts, better known as Conder tokens today. Minor abrasions keep this piece from a higher grade, although no actual signs of wear are present and the edges are razor-sharp.
