Description

Beautiful DH-172 Middlesex Penny on Odd Planchet

Rare 1797 Middlesex/Trinity College Penny. D&H-172. Copper, 35 mm, 17.8 gm. Part of the "Miscellaneous Series." Obverse: TRINITY COLLEGE above, perspective view of buildings, JACOBS underneath, and LIBRARY CAMB. at lower edge. Reverse: MIDDLESEX PENNY at upper periphery, 1797 below. A portcullis and scales in the center are framed by sprigs of oak and laurel. Edge: I PROMISE TO PAY ON DEMAND THE BEARER ONE PENNY. Struck on an oddly formed planchet that must have been at the end of the strip, as evinced by the small, curved clip near the 3 o'clock obverse rim. Above the clip are two beveled areas on the rim and the center seems to have a raised area, thus causing minor strike weakness on the opposite side. In terms of condition, this is a Select Uncirculated piece with prooflike surfaces and a pleasing amount of red coloration poking through the natural patination. A rare and peculiar Conder token that is worthy of aggressive bidding competition.
