1787 DBLN Brasher New York Style Doubloon. EB Punch on Breast. XF45 NGC. Lots 30011 through 30017 represent what is almost certainly the ultimate collection of coins related to Ephraim Brasher, the New York city gold and silversmith. Included are two colonial copper coins produced by John Bailey and punchlinked to the Brasher Doubloons, two gold coins from Brazil that each have an EB counterstamp, the important 1742-dated Lima Style Brasher Doubloon, the famous 1787 New York Style Brasher Doubloon with EB punched on the eagle's wing, and the unique 1787 New York Style Brasher Doubloon with EB punched on the eagle's breast.

In the Garrett Collection sale, this coin was called "the single most important coin in American numismatics." Today, its status is no different. Any coin that is unique can be considered an important coin. The importance also depends on the coin's position in the numismatic world. A Colonial American gold coin, one of two varieties intended for actual circulation, maintains a higher position in American numismatics than another coin which might be part of a long series of coinage issues. In his day, B. Max Mehl was fond of comparing certain rarities to that "King of American Coins," the 1804 dollar. Today, we have other coins that can provide a comparison. Certainly, we feel this coin is the equal of the 1804 silver dollar in terms of importance. It seems far more important than the unique 1870-S three-dollar gold piece, or the 1870-S half dime, or other unique coins. Is it as important as the 1933 double eagle? In our opinion, it is. Is it worth as much, or will it sell for as much as that coin recently sold for? We certainly hope so. In fact, we whole-heartedly agree with Dave Bowers' comments regarding the offering of this coin in the Garrett Collection. We feel that this coin is the single most important coin in American numismatics!

1787 1C Fugio Cent, STATES UNITED, Cinquefoils MS62 Red and Brown PCGS. Newman 8-X, R.3. A beautiful golden-brown Fugio Cent, undisturbed aside from a few inconspicuous mint-made planchet fissures. A late die stage with a dramatic die break (as produced) over the left half of MIND YOUR BUSINESS, metal flow to this area causes localized softness of strike on the upper reverse. Listed on page 69 of the 2005 Guide Book.

1794 1C Head of 1794 XF45 NGC. VF20 EAC. S-23, Die State V, High R.4. Called by Maris the "Standless 4" variety, with later die state examples of this variety more easily identifiable by the die crack from the rim though the pole. This is the terminal die state for the variety with the first crack extending through Liberty's hair and cap to the rim at 10 o'clock. A second die crack from the rim through Y continues to Liberty's nose and cheek. The surfaces on this piece are lovely and glossy with an even medium brown color that deepens only around the devices. A few pinprick-sized marks are seen on the obverse and even fewer are present on the reverse. A couple of small rim bumps are scattered around the obverse and there is one distinctive bump on the reverse rim at 6 o'clock. A lovely coin that is tied for 10th finest known; after viewing it is easy to understand why one would want to add his or her name to the distinguished numismatists listed in the pedigree.

1794 1C Head of 1794 AU50 NGC. VF25 EAC. S-24, Die State I, R.1. Maris called this the "Scarred Head" variety, so-named because of the ear-shaped depression (or "scar") in the hair below the ear at the back of the neck. Sheldon chose a more flattering name, calling it the "Apple Cheek" variety (as his father used to term it) because of the exceptionally rounded, full cheek of Liberty. This is a pleasing and attractive example of the rare early die state without any evidence of die cracks or clash marks. The surfaces exhibit medium brown color with olive tones. Unevenly struck with the left obverse and reverse slightly weak. A number of light abrasions are scattered over each side with a tiny rim bump at 10 o'clock on the obverse. Someone with too much time on his hands has "strengthened" one of the denticles on the reverse at 8 o'clock.

1794 1C Head of 1794 AU55 NGC. XF40 EAC. S-44, Die State III, R.1. Despite the fact that this is one of the most common 1794 large cent varieties, the average condition of survivors is lower than most. Del Bland includes only a single MS60 coin alongside three AU coins in his Condition Census. This example is among the top 20 or so known for the die pair. This is a lovely cent with deep olive and steel color, intermingled with lighter tan.

1794 1C Head of 1794 Fine Details NCS. VG7 EAC. S-66, Die State II, High R.5. Dr. William H. Sheldon called this the Split Pole variety, for it is usually recognized by the die crack from the lower edge of the pole to the border. Some examples from the earliest die state do not have any evidence of this die crack, and must be recognized by Dr. Maris' Distant 1 nomenclature. This example appears to be among the top dozen known. The medium brown surfaces have splashes of darker steel color and very light porosity on both sides. NCS Corroded.

The collector of major varieties, based on listings in the Guide Book or other similar references, will want to consider this opportunity carefully. The Sheldon-75 variety is the most plentiful of all 1795 Lettered Edge cents. This is a gorgeous cent with golden-brown color and grayish-brown highlights. The surfaces are exceptional for the grade with only a few minute abrasions.

1798 1C Reverse of 1796 AG3 NGC. Good 6/3 = Good 4 EAC. S-178, Die State IV, High R.5. Although considerably worn, this appears to be the terminal die state for the variety, with a second crack through the date, parallel to the first. While this is still a rare variety, it was once considered an excessive rarity. When Dr. Sheldon published Early American Cents in 1949, he was only aware of four examples with a fifth reported. This variety was discovered years earlier by James A. Walker in 1913, and was first published by Dr. Charles McGirk in his series prepared for The Numismatist. Finest known is just VF30, and the classic Condition Census extends down to VG8. The extended census includes the 12 finest examples and reaches the Good 6 plateau. The obverse of this cent is nicely detailed with some remaining definition in the lower hair curls. The reverse is partly smooth, but the all-important single leaves at the top of each branch are clearly visible. This is a highly unusual example of the variety, for it is on a nearly smooth brown planchet with excellent surfaces for the grade. Only the slightest roughness may be seen with magnification. The typical example of this variety is found with very rough and darkly colored surfaces.

1798 1C Second Hair Style VF30 NGC. Fine 12 EAC. S-165, Die State II, Low R.4. This obverse die is instantly recognized, being the only obverse with a large 8 and with the Style II hair. Three reverse dies were used with this obverse to create S-165, 166, and 167. The surfaces have intermingled chestnut and dark brown with some lighter tan on the reverse. The obverse has a tiny rim bruise on R of LIBERTY.

1798 1C Second Hair Style VF25 NGC. Fine 12 EAC. S-173, Die State V, R.3. This is a pleasing example with choice surfaces and excellent light brown color. The high points are a tad lighter in appearance. An obverse rim break extends over and joins RTY. This is from the same reverse die that was used for the 1799 NC-1 rarity offered later in this sale, and this 1798-dated cent was struck immediately before the 1799 overdate.

1801 1C AG3 NGC. Good 5 EAC. S-215, Die State VII or VIII, Low R.5. In the late die states, several bulges give the appearance of considerably more wear than has actually occurred. Such is the case with this example. The date is only partially visible due to prominent bulges in the area of the lower hair curls. Strong clash marks on the reverse cause some distortion of the surrounding area, again creating the appearance of more wear than is really visible. The result of all this is a coin that has the outward appearance of a lower grade than it actually is. Such is the case with this coin, yet most observers will be fooled if they are not familiar with the characteristics of this particular variety. This example has lovely surfaces for the grade, with pleasing medium brown color and attractive golden undertones.

1808 1C XF40 NGC. VF20 EAC. S-279, Die State II, R.1. The early die states appear to be more common than later states. This is a pleasing chocolate-brown and olive example that may have been cleaned and retoned. A small rim nick is visible on the obverse at 11:30. In Penny Whimsy, Dr. Sheldon talked about the obverse: "Found perfect and with the die badly injured. After the injury, the obverse seems poorly struck, with the stars on the right connected to the rim; the figures of the date distorted; ribbon ends distorted; a pit or indentation just in front of the throat. This die must have come into violent contact with something hard." We would suggest that hard object may have been the opposing reverse die! It is also important to remember that the dies for the Classic Head cents had an average life of over 250,000 impressions, a considerable number of coins for the period.

A branch crack extends through the left side of star 8, but it is so faint as to be virtually invisible. Cleaned and recolored with attractive light tan surfaces and hints of darker iridescent toning. NCS Improperly Cleaned.

1923-S 50C MS65 PCGS. A very attractive coin that sports strong luster in the fields and satiny texture throughout. The strike is fairly sharp for this date, with most of the definition present on Liberty's head, but her thumb is a little weak. One nick is located right at the base of her knee and this will serve to identify this coin. Faint obverse die cracks are seen through Liberty's head and the flag. The combined NGC and PCGS population reports show 67 pieces graded this high with an additional 18 coins seen finer.

1976-D Kennedy 50C Clad Bicentennial Half Dollar--Double Struck, Both Off Center, Double Brockage--MS64 ANACS. The 'primary' strike is 40% off center toward 12 o'clock, the reverse for this strike is a perfect brockage. The 'secondary' strike is more than 90% off center toward 6 o'clock, only the letter E in LIBERTY and the top center of the hair is present. The reverse for the secondary strike is also a brockage, although a later stage with only a distorted letter L discernible. This combination of errors is probably unique for a Bicentennial Half, and the first strike brockage provides a spectacular appearance.
