1804 1/2 C Crosslet 4, No Stems MS63 Brown PCGS. C-12, B-11, R.2. The No Stems reverse die is known with Plain 4 and Crosslet 4 obverse dies. The Plain 4 obverse (identified as C-13), is often encountered in Mint State grades, while this Crosslet 4, No Stems variety is much scarcer in high grades. This piece has glossy brown surfaces with excellent cartwheel luster. The obverse has a crescent of light brown with considerable darker brown color above, as well as a few small splashes of ebony. The reverse is fully light brown with hints of olive. EAC 50. (PCGS# 1072)

1877 1C MS64 Red and Brown PCGS. The 1877 has always held a favored position as the key issue in the Indian cent series. Its low mintage of only 852,500 pieces explains its scarcity in all grades. It is especially difficult to locate in Mint condition and with remnants of original mint color. This is an attractive coin that is well defined. Most of the original mint red is still evident beneath the woodgrain pattern of brown that overlies each side. The only trace of carbon we see is a small spot beneath the ribbon end on the lower reverse. An exceptionally good value and sure to be of interest to a wide range of collectors.

1937-D 5C Three-Legged MS63 PCGS. The Three-Legged variety of the 1937-D Nickel usually doesn't grade any better than XF. This is a very nice Mint State coin that has original, satiny surfaces that are argent-gray overall with strong underlying crimson-rose iridescence. This piece shows a typically soft strike near the centers on both obverse and reverse, but is actually much sharper than average near the peripheries. There is a mark on the Indian's lower jaw on the obverse, while a few trivial abrasions are seen on the reverse. A grainy orange-peel texture is common throughout, the result of heavy die erosion. A solid Mint State representative of this ever-popular variety.

1916-D 10C MS64 Full Bands PCGS. The 1916-D Mercury Dime is a key-date issue with a production of just 264,000 coins that were all delivered in November of that year. It seems that the coinage was halted so that Denver Mint personnel could concentrate on production of six million quarter dollars at the end of the year. Nearly all of these dimes that have survived the past century have done so in lower grades, with most examples showing considerable signs of circulation. Choice and Gem Mint State examples are not often seen, especially with full bands like this piece. Both sides have deep and vibrant iridescent toning over satiny luster. A few tiny surface ticks have undoubtedly prevented a higher grade.

1916 25C MS63 Full Head PCGS. The 1916 quarter, struck in a transitional year between the Barber and Standing Liberty designs, is one of the most famous 20th century silver rarities. Only 52,000 pieces were struck and very few survive today. This is a satiny example that is essentially untoned, only showing trace amounts of color on either side. Well struck for this often poorly defined issue, and displaying just two or three trivial nicks on the obverse. The surfaces display a very distinct matte-like texture in the field areas, which actually serves to increase the noteworthy visual appeal of the piece. This exceedingly scarce key date quarter is housed in an earlier PCGS holder with a pale green label.

1893-S $1 AU50 PCGS. Hints of tan toning are present here and there, but this key date dollar is mostly untoned. Luster is obvious within Liberty's hair and the eagle's plumage, and the margins offer glimpses of satin iridescence. Close examination beneath a lens locates a few moderate marks on the portrait, although these do not distract given the AU50 grade. Some detail remains on the eagle's breast and on the hair curl above the ear. In short, this is a problem-free lightly worn example that provides an affordable alternative to the nearly unobtainable Mint State grade. The 1893-S has a mintage similar to the 1894, but the latter is much more plentiful in Uncirculated condition. (PCGS# 7226)

1894 $1 MS64 PCGS. Ex: Casper II. Except for the 1895 issues, the 1894 Philadelphia mint dollars have the lowest mintage of any from that mint. The 1894 is an important, high visibility issue in the Morgan dollar series as only 110,972 pieces were produced. This low mintage is undoubtedly responsible for much of the issue's charm and attraction to collectors. However, it is also an unquestioned condition rarity as well as an absolute rarity with high grade pieces seldom being offered. The devices show razor-sharp definition with complete hair detail over Liberty's ear and full feathers on the eagle's breast. The fields are somewhat reflective and the only marks of note are a small cluster between the eagle's right (facing) wing and the wreath. Lightly and evenly toned over each side. (PCGS# 7228)

1874 $5 MS63 PCGS. In its Bass auction appearance, the cataloger noted, "On the accompanying ticket for this particular coin, Harry Bass wrote, FINEST KNOWN, then emphatically underlined the words. Nearly three decades after his purchase of this specimen, FINEST KNOWN probably still seems to be as accurate as ever." Time continues to pass, and it has been seven years since the Bass II auction. Yet the present piece remains the single finest certified 1874 half eagle, unequalled in business strike format at either PCGS or NGC. Only 3,488 business strikes and 20 proofs were struck. This smooth and prooflike piece has radiant honey-gold fields. This is an example of Breen-6688, with strike doubling on UNITED STATES, that Breen misinterpreted as a doubled die. If it were an Indian half eagle with the distinction of finest certified, it would realize over a hundred thousand dollars. As a Liberty half eagle without a C, D, or CC mintmark, it will sell for less than it should now, but perhaps not so in the future.

1909 $5 MS66 NGC. An exceptional coin for this date. The Indian half eagle series has several elusive dates, and even dates with generous mintages can be quite rare in Gem grades. A case in point would be this 1909 half eagle. Despite the plentiful mintage of 627,060 struck, only a handful qualify as Gems today, and in this next grading tier, a total of seven coins have been awarded the MS66 grade from both NGC and PCGS. No examples of this date have been graded finer than the present coin. Although 1909 cents of all mintmark varieties and types were hoarded, the gold coins of this date were ignored. Even the dramatic 1909/8 overdate did not appear in Wayte Raymond's Standard Catalogue of United States Coins until 1944.

On the present coin, we note a thin, almost invisible scratch from star 3 to the Indian's mouth. On the reverse there are a couple of minor luster grazes in the field behind the eagle's head, which will serve to identify this pristine coin. The strike is exquisite, with full definition throughout the headdress feathers, and intricate detail on the eagle's plumage, even on the sometimes indistinct uppermost portion of the front wing. Olive-green tints emerge from the subtle apricot toning, and this arrangement of colors is associated with original 20th century gold coins. The satin luster is comprehensive, and the eye appeal is undeniable. The dies are moderately rotated counterclockwise. An opportunity to put away a classic example of a condition rarity worthy of the finest collection. Census: 4 in 66, 0 finer (10/06). (PCGS# 8513)
