1854 P1C One Cent, Judd-160, Pollock-187, R.4, PR64 Brown PCGS. Ex: Charles Parrish. The obverse is similar to that used on regular issue 1854 cents, except there are no stars. The denomination is centered on the reverse within a laurel wreath, and the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA is around the periphery. Struck in copper or bronze with a plain edge. The medium brown surfaces show bright silvery-lilac accents of color within and around the devices.

1808 1C XF40 Field Tooled, Burnished Uncertified. S-279, R.1. Die State 2+. This coin presents well with orange-brown patina and some medium intensity, glossy-brown color in the center of the reverse. Save for stars 8-13 and the right obverse border (see below), the devices are bold enough to suggest an above average strike for the type. There are a few light abrasions in the center of the obverse, and the fields around Liberty's portrait have been tooled.

Late die states of S-279 exhibit extensive damage to the obverse die: stars at the right drawn to the rim, figures of the date distorted, ribbon ends distorted, an indentation in the field before Liberty's throat, and overall poor striking definition. On the present example, stars 8-13 are drawn toward the right border, and the denticles in that area are incomplete, but we can find no evidence of the other forms of die damage.

1808 1C MS62 Brown Uncertified. S-278, R.3. Die State Four. The Philadelphia Mint continued to receive copper planchets from the Birmingham, England firm of Boulton & Wyatt in 1808, but the quality of these blanks was not on par with those of earlier shipments. As a result, many examples of S-277, S-278, and S-279 are dark and/or porous, even in high grades. Not so the present BU representative. This coin is evenly toned in medium intensity chocolate-brown color. The strike is typical of the variety with suitably bold definition in the centers and softer detail in most peripheral areas. Sprays of deeper color are noted in the right obverse field and on the reverse between STATES and OF. A series of four small indentations in the lower reverse field are the most obvious pedigree markers. According to Tom Reynolds, and based on EAC grading standards, this coin is tied for the # 14 Condition Census ranking for S-278. This lot includes PCGS insert #21016682 that also grades this coin MS62 Brown.

1808 1C MS63 Brown Uncertified. S-277, R.2. Die State Four. A late die state, star 1 on the obverse is extremely faint, the reverse die has started to sink over the TA in STATES, the arcing die crack on the reverse is well advanced, and the second reverse crack is also bold from the D in UNITED through the ONE in the denomination. Mint records indicate that 1,109,000 Large Cents were produced in 1808. Writing in 1988, however, Breen asserts that at least 102,000 of these coins were 1807-dated Draped Bust Cents, a fact that is confirmed by the 1808 Classic Cent mintage figure reported in the 2002 Guide Book.
According to both the consignor and Tom Reynolds, and based on EAC grading standards, this coin is tied for the #4 Condition Census ranking for S-277. A lovely, Select quality Cent, both sides are toned in overlapping tan and medium brown shades with some tinges of reddish color in the more protected areas over the lower obverse. With the exception of those features that are typically weak for the variety, this coin displays bold definition. The surfaces are glossy in texture and free of outwardly distracting blemishes, although a well concealed reverse spot over the E in UNITED should serve as a useful pedigree marker. A great provenance rounds out this coin's list of positive attributes. Accompanied by a PCGS insert (#21016681) that also grades this coin MS63 Brown.

1810 1C XF45 Uncertified. S-282, R.2. Die State Two. This is an important coin in that the letters in ONE CENT on the reverse are boldly doubled to the right. Although lightly worn overall, this coin retains ample evidence of a bold strike. In fact, all major features are discernible save for the denticles at the upper and right reverse borders. Both sides are evenly toned in reddish-brown shades, there are a series of small scrapes in the center of the reverse and a tiny indentation in the obverse field before Liberty's eye. A coin that clearly beckons further study. Accompanied by a PCGS insert (#21016686) that also grades this coin XF45.

1810 1C MS60 Brown, Cleaned Uncertified. S-284, R.3. Late die states of this variety display soft overall definition from deteriorating dies. This coin is not fully struck, but the definition is bold, if not sharp, over the central devices. The right peripheries are a little blunt from an uneven impression--a not uncommon feature for Cents of this date. The surfaces are somewhat glossy in texture with pale, orange-tan undertones, medium brown patina, and slightly darker toning over the upper obverse. Despite the cleaning and some minor handling marks, this is an uncommonly problem-free representative of this conditionally rare type.

1810 1C MS63 Brown Uncertified. S-282, R.2. Die State One. This coin is not perfectly centered, but virtually all of the border denticles are discernible. The central devices are boldly detailed, and the peripheral features are well impressed save for stars 1-7 on the obverse and the letters in UNITED STATES on the reverse. Glossy in texture, the otherwise medium brown surfaces reveal a crescent of tan patina along the right obverse border. A few small abrasions are noted in the obverse field and on the reverse below CENT, none of which are worthy of individual mention. According to Tom Reynolds, and based on EAC grading standards, this coin's Condition Census ranking is # 2. Accompanied by PCGS insert #21016685 that also grades this coin MS63 Brown. This lot also includes a coin envelope that the consignor received from George Blenker. Written on the envelope is: "Attribution and grading confirmed by Walter Breen, John D. 1810 1C MS63 Brown Uncertified. S-283, R.2. Uneven striking pressure characterizes many extant 1810 Large Cents, and the present S-283 representative is more boldly detailed in the centers than around the peripheries. Still, all devices are easily discernible, and the otherwise toned, tan-brown surfaces retain whispers of faded orange-red luster (particularly on the reverse). A few faint carbon spots are seen in the fields, but the surfaces are free of singularly mentionable distractions. One of several Select quality 1810 Cents from this consignor, this partially lustrous coin is sure to elicit strong bids from copper specialists. After evaluating this coin based on EAC grading standards, Tom Reynolds assigned it the # 1 Condition Census ranking for S-283. 1810 1C MS63 Brown Uncertified. S-285, R.2. Die State Two, although the RT from LIBERTY is not clashed in the reverse field below the T in CENT. Writing in 1988, Breen stated of this variety: "...the few Mint State survivors are mostly red and slightly prooflike, from a tiny hoard discovered in the 1930s." In addition to the frosty finish that characterizes both sides, this coin's pedigree confirms that it was not part of that hoard. Beautiful shades of orange-brown and golden-brown patina overlay the mostly smooth surfaces with traces of blue-gray iridescence over the central and right reverse. Unevenness of strike is noted only on the reverse over the letters in STATES, and the only mentionable distraction is a crimson tinged area of porosity on the obverse over the point of Liberty's bust and star 1. A similarly colored, yet less conspicuous spot is also seen at 2 o'clock on the obverse border. This is an aesthetically pleasing representative with a significant pedigree. 1811 1C MS60 Brown, Cleaned Uncertified. S-287, R.2. Die State Two. Like the 1808, 1809, and 1813 deliveries, the 1811 is characterized by poor planchets that explain the dark and/or corroded state of most survivors. This is not a problem-free coin, but the surfaces are exceptionally smooth for the issue with a rich, glossy-brown sheen. There are no singularly mentionable abrasions, and the strike is at least bold in all areas. The centers are a little shiny.

1812 1C Small Date AU58 Uncertified. S-290, R.1. Die State Two. The small engraver's scratch on Liberty's neck below the ear is the most readily identifiable diagnostic of this Small Date die marriage. Both sides are toned in competing medium brown and tan colors, with the latter shade dominating on the reverse. A late die state, the obverse die has started to fail at stars 5-7, but most other features are boldly defined despite a little light rub. The few abrasions that are present are not individually distracting and well within the context of the near-Mint grade level. An old, dull pinscratch from the obverse stars across Liberty's cheek is, however, noted for accuracy. This coin is accompanied by PCGS insert #21016693 that also grades the coin AU58.

1812 1C Small Date MS60 Brown, Corroded Uncertified. S-291, High R.2. The central features are nicely detailed, and the peripheral devices are mostly bold. Slight unevenness of strike explains the incomplete denticulation on both sides, but this feature is not overly distracting. Both sides have toned in rich, olive-brown shades with isolated areas of verdigris that are mostly confined to the reverse. Despite the impairment, this is a relatively nice representative of this challenging type.

Warm chocolate-brown color overlays both sides with some medium brown patination in the left obverse field and toward the center of the reverse. 1812 1C Large Date MS63 Brown Uncertified. S-288, R.3. Die State Three. A simply extraordinary Classic Cent irrespective of date or variety, the surfaces are smooth with no noteworthy abrasions. There are also no outwardly distracting carbon spots, and the otherwise evenly toned, tan-brown surfaces reveal a few isolated areas of medium brown color on both sides. Well struck save for the extreme peripheries, this coin is the finest 1812 Large Date Cent of either variety (S-288 or S-289) that we have handled in recent memory. 1814 1C Crosslet 4 AU50 Uncertified. S-294, R.1. Die State Two. This evenly toned, chocolate-brown example retains ample evidence of a bold strike. The impression is not perfectly centered, but all border denticles are at least discernible. A few light abrasions over and before the obverse portrait are noted for accuracy. The final-year 1814 was produced to the extent of just 357,830 pieces. The Mint used backlogged planchets from before the War of 1812, since that conflict prevented new shipments from the English firm of Boulton & Wyatt. According to Breen (1988), Cents of this date are difficult to find in high grades because the shortage of circulating specie during the war created significant public demand for new coins. This fortunate survivor, therefore, should fetch a considerable sum when it crosses the auction block. Accompanied by PCGS insert #21016698 that also grades this coin AU50.

Both sides are toned in glossy-brown shades with no outwardly disturbing abrasions. Burnished in the upper left obverse field and in the reverse field above the ONE in the denomination.

1870 10C Standard Silver Ten Cents, Judd-843, Pollock-942, R.5-6, PR64 PCGS. Ex: Charles Parrish. The obverse has a head of Liberty with a diadem in her hair and a scroll beneath the bust rather than the date. The reverse is simply laid out with 10 CENTS in the center, surrounded by a wreath of cotton and corn with STANDARD above. Struck in silver with a reeded edge. Deeply toned, the only surface flaws we see are a couple of contact marks at the top of the reverse, which are well concealed by the toning.

Lightly and evenly toned with strongly mirrored fields.
