1858 Small Letters PR 63. Boldly struck on a thick, copper-nickel planchet. Lightly cleaned at one time, resulting in some scattered field hairlines. A nice, representative example of this popular type. Breen estimates the original population of this variety to be around 100 pieces. This estimate is based on anecdotal information and guesses as to how many 1858 pattern sets were sold, how many proof sets were sold, and how many individual coins were sold. In other words, we don't know. Breen claims to have seen 20 different specimens, PCGS reports having graded 31 (6/95), and NGC has graded 9 specimens (4/95). Regardless of how many were actually made, this issue remains very rare today. (PCGS# 2043)

Unquestionably, a rarity with the George S. Nixon signature. Under Nixon's ownership and presidency, the bank issued red seals and dated back blue seals. The popular Washington obverse with GOD AND OUR COUNTRY at the top; the reverse is similar to the adopted design but the word CENTS is sharply curved. Struck in bronze with a plain edge. Much bright red mint luster is present on each side with a slight overlay of speckled brown. A few small planchet flaws on the cheek of Washington account for the grade. (PCGS# 70460)
