1870 2C PR66 Red NGC. An absolutely phenomenal Two Cent proof example. The surfaces are bright and deeply mirrored with shimmering, unmellowed red mint color over each side. Numerous die polish lines (as struck) are seen in the obverse field. As a future identifier, one small abrasion is noted below the left (facing) arrow shaft at 7 o'clock near the obverse rim. Still, one of the finest proof Two Cent pieces we have seen in several years. Population: 10 in 66, 1 finer (11/03). (PCGS# 3644)

1866 5C Rays PR65 Cameo PCGS. First year of issue, and almost the only year Rays nickels were struck, as the 1867 version is extremely rare. An unknown number of proofs were struck in this year, but it was apparently more than the official mintage of 125 pieces. This is a lightly toned example that shows impressive depth of mirrors in the fields and considerable mint frost on the devices. A few tiny flyspecks of carbon prevent an even higher grade. Population: 19 in 65, 21 finer (10/03). (PCGS# 83817)

1838 25C No Drapery MS63 NGC. Ex: Pittman. This was the first year of the Liberty Seated quarter design type. This example is well struck, with slight flatness on star 8, and the usual weakness near the borders. The surfaces are very clean, with a couple of small bagmarks noted on the obverse, and several more near the reverse center. Deep purple-mauve toning blankets each side, with muted lavender-blue color near the rims. Despite a seemingly high mintage of 466,000 pieces, this date remains elusive in Mint State. Population: 17 in 63, 28 finer (11/03).
Ex: The John Jay Pittman Collection (David Akers, 5/98), Lot 1297, where it realized $4,675. (PCGS# 5391)

1857-S $20 Bold 7, Faint S MS62 PCGS. Ex: S.S. Central America. The 7 is noticeably stronger punched than the other three digits in the date--presumably a three-digit gang punch was used for the 185 and the 7 was hand-punched in, which would allow for the fourth digit to appear with varying degrees of strength from one die to another. The mintmark is also considerably weaker than on other 1857-S Twenties we have seen. As usual with this salvaged issue, the mint luster is simply extraordinary and the overall strike is bold. A few small abrasions are primarily concentrated on Liberty's cheek and the field to her left. Accompanied by the original box of issue and certificate. (PCGS# 70003)

1853 E1C One Cent, Judd-149, Pollock-178, R.5--Scratched--ANACS. AU Details, Net XF40. Struck from a regular issue Liberty Quarter Eagle obverse die, while the reverse features a laurel wreath and the denomination ONE CENT. Curiously, ONE is engraved high while CENT is low, as if some central motif was intended but never entered. Struck in German silver alloy with a reeded edge. Thin and thick planchet pieces are known, but the encapsulation prevents measurement of the weight or examination of the edge. A hairlined dove-gray example with several noticeable pinscratches on the obverse. (PCGS# 11622)
