1853 P1C One Cent, Judd-151, Pollock-178, R.5, PR64 PCGS. The obverse is the same as that used to coin regular issue 1853 Quarter Eagles. The reverse shows the denomination ONE CENT within a laurel wreath. Struck in a nickel-copper alloy with a reeded edge. The relatively bright, silver-gray surfaces are sharply impressed with modest brightness in the fields. With no mentionable hairlines or contact marks, this coin has the eye appeal of a Gem. (PCGS# 11628)

The medium brown surfaces show bright silvery-lilac accents of color within and around the devices.

1855 P1C Flying Eagle Cent, Judd-168 Original, Pollock-193, R.4, MS61 Brown ANACS. A flying Eagle cent pattern in a large format, featuring a hooked-neck eagle, slanting 5s on the obverse, and ONE CENT in the center of the reverse surrounded by a thick laurel wreath similar to a Large Cent. Struck in copper with a plain edge. Sharply struck and deeply toned, with pronounced reflectivity in the fields, pronounced die clashing is seen on each side. An interesting, very scarce pattern issue.

The reverse features a wheat wreath surrounded by UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and encompassing 2 CENTS, the word CENTS being more dramatically curved. Struck in copper or bronze with a plain edge. This specimen exhibits a streaky, woodgrain appearance with subtle glossiness over both sides. (PCGS# 60460)

1652 SHILNG Oak Tree Shilling VF30 PCGS. Noe-11, R.6. 67.7 grains. The devices show much evidence of recutting on the dies, a common phenomenon in the Massachusetts silver series. Medium gray overall with darkness around some of the letters and devices, providing a pleasant contrast. There is one somewhat lighter patch of color on the X of the denomination. 1652 SHILNG Oak Tree Shilling AU50 PCGS.. Noe-3, R.6. 70.4 grains. This is a high grade specimen of a rare variety of Massachusetts silver. There is a punch mark on the reverse which also made a mark on the obverse to the right of the tree. But the detail in some areas, especially on the tree, is terrific. The obverse is slightly off-center in the same direction as the Noe plate coin. This resulted in the bottom of the obverse showing evidence that the edge of the die was straight rather than round. This is perfectly consistent with the work of Richard Doty and Michael Hodder showing that a rocker press was used to mint these coins rather than a screw press. Listed on page 18 of the 2002 Guide Book.

The obverse is somewhat uneven, being weak over large areas and slightly off-center. Evidence of a straightened bend much more obvious on the obverse than on the reverse. This is from the late die state with some die breaks not mentioned by Noe. Listed on page 18 of the 2002 Guide Book.

1662 2PENCE Oak Tree Twopence XF40 PCGS. Noe-31, R.6. 13.4 grains. With die breaks on reverse. The surfaces are somewhat granular and the centers are weak but lots of detail shows on this fairly dark piece. A rare variety, no example was in the 1991 ANS exhibit of Massachusetts silver from their collection and a number of private collections. This specimen is heavier than all 6(!) illustrated in Noe's monograph (they ranged from 10.1 to 11.9 grains).

1662 2PENCE Oak Tree Twopence XF40 Clipped Uncertified. Noe-31, R.6. 10.6 grains. Intermediate die state with the later stage of the die break than the other Twopence, but before the die was recut. These are the only dies used for the Oak Tree Twopence (though Noe's numbering system results in different die variety numbers for the same pair of dies), and these are the only Massachusetts silver dies dated 1662. As such, always in demand. This example has a well-centered reverse with virtually full legends. The obverse is somewhat off-center with only ATHVSET on the planchet. Slightly out of round, which may be the result of how the planchet was originally cut or a bit of clipping.

1652 SHILNG Pine Tree Shilling, Large Planchet VF20 PCGS. Noe-11, R.4. 68.7 grains. There is a straightened bend (common on this issue due to the thin planchets) and a few nicks on each side. But there is a nice contrast of light letters against darker gray fields. All the letters are present but the tops of some are off the edge of the planchet. This Noe die variety is also a specific Red Book variety, with the spelling MASATVSETS (note the missing H). On the reverse, all the N's are backward (or upside down, you decide!). Listed on page 18 of the 2002 Guide Book.

1652 SHILNG Pine Tree Shilling, Large Planchet VF35 PCGS. Noe-2, R.2. 67.9 grains. Large planchet pine tree Shillings are always very popular. This coin has been bent and straightened with some minor loss of detail but only affecting small areas. Much of the obverse and almost all of the reverse remains strong. The planchets of these are quite thin to allow a Shilling's worth of silver to be made into such a large diameter coin. Listed on page 18 of the 2002 Guide Book.

1652 SHILNG Pine Tree Shilling, Large Planchet VF35 PCGS. Noe-10, R.3. 66.5 grains. The obverse used on both Noe-8 and 9 with the reverse of Noe-9 but recut. This variety has a quaint mix of both normal and backwards N's in the legends. Weakness is seen from 6 to 10 o'clock on the obverse and the corresponding area of reverse legend. The central devices and much of the legends are bold and clear. Nice surfaces except for some trivial pitting on part of the reverse. Actually a nicer coin than the description makes it sound.

This variety is a distinct Red Book type, with the NE of New England merged into a single monogram. A few old scratches on the obverse have toned over long ago. The planchet has a touch of the waviness that shows that these were struck on a rocker press.
