1840 1/2 C Original. PO-1, B-1, R.6. PR63 Brown NGC. PR60 EAC. Small date; Large berries. As an Original of the 1840 issue, this attractive Proof represents the very first Braided Hair Half Cent. Jules had identified this as the plate coin in the second edition of Cohen. However, it does not appear to match the illustration. All the design details are boldly defined, including all stars and leaves. The surfaces are lightly reflective but not deeply mirrored as usual. Deep olive with hints of steel-blue color.

Walter Breen delved deeply into these Proof issues of the 1840s. Although quite a bit of his writing was based on unsubstantiated commentary and assumptions that he made, the pages of his Half Cent Encyclopedia dealing with these coins are still well worth reading.

Half Cents from 1840 through 1848 were not made for circulation; the limited production was intended for inclusion in Proof Sets and Presentation Sets of the period. Breen suggested that it was not coincidental that Proof Sets were first made at the Mint in 1840.

1836 1/2 C PR64 Red and Brown PCGS. B-1, Low R.6. A razor-sharp near-Gem with bright orange-gold color throughout most of the obverse, while the reverse has olive and golden-brown patina. A miniscule carbon fleck behind the hair ribbon and a shallow planchet flaw (as made) below star 6 will pedigree this rare and desirable specimen. Population: 4 in 64, 3 finer (4/03). (PCGS# 1248)

1840 1/2 C Original PR62 Brown PCGS. B-1a, R.6. The Original 1840 and 1841 half cents can be considered reeded edge half cents. Apparently all planchets were prepared with a reeded edge, and then coined in a plain collar, crushing the edge reeding. Some examples still exist with traces of the edge reeding visible. Approximately 15 to 20 examples are known in a wide range of quality. This piece is rather dull with moderately reflective surfaces. All of the design elements are boldly defined and the surfaces have deep olive-brown color with hints of pale blue toning. Scattered contact marks are visible on each side. EAC PR60. (PCGS# 1248)

1840 Original PR 64 Brown. B-1a, R.6. A splendid example of this scarce proof-only date. Dark-brown toning on both the obverse and reverse, evenly matched and very choice. Free of distracting spots or evidence of handling, and, all told, this is one of the best of a dozen or so in private hands. Quickly identifiable by the ten large berries on the reverse, along with a tiny one left of the upper serif of the H of HALF. The obverse is identified by light horizontal die file marks between the date and the first star. As discussed without conclusion in Breen, the edge has evidence of reeding, which was apparently crushed when this coin was struck employing a plain edge collar. Flattened reeding can easily be seen on the edge. Dr. Montgomery researched period copper coins from all over the world, but was unable to locate any reeded edge copper coinage. As to why the planchets were prepared with reeding, then were struck using a plain collar, remains a mystery. Perhaps the late night--after hours--creators of these employed the available equipment at the Mint, in the process imparting the unnecessary reeded edge.

1834 PR 65 Brown NGC. B-1, C-1, R.6. Ex: Dawson. Iridescent olive-green and copper-rose overtones, with hardly a trace of faded mint red color to be found. There is a modest, glassy reflectivity on each side and the devices are struck in all areas with the exactness of a proof. Over the left side of star 4 is a tiny rim dent, but this is the only visible defect. An elusive proof issue, one of perhaps as few as 20 survivors. (PCGS# 1248)

1836 PR 60 Brown, Cleaned. Original. Identifiable as an original striking by the lack of a squared off border and also the lack of any "knife rim." A low R.6 as such. The fields show strong reflectivity, and the coin overall is bright (no doubt due in great part from the cleaning). The light reddish surfaces are covered with specks of carbon and what appears to be a trace of an old fingerprint on the obverse. (PCGS# 1248)

1840 1/2 C Original PR61 Brown NGC. B-1a, R.6. Original proof Half Cents of this date are very rare, as are the restrikes. Originals are easily identified by the ten large berries on the reverse, along with a tiny one left of the upper serif of the H of HALF. The obverse shows light horizontal die file marks between the date and the first star. For some unknown reason, original 1840 proof Half Cents were reeded on the edge. The reeding was then partially crushed by a plain edge collar. Unfortunately, this "side" of the coin cannot be seen in the NGC slab. The striking details are uncommonly sharp on all of the design features, the fields are uncommonly deep in their reflectivity, and the rims are wide and squared off around both sides--all characteristics of a proof striking. The surfaces show deep brown and olive-green patina but appear to be unspotted. (PCGS# 1248)

1833 PR 62 Brown PCGS. Deep-brown on both sides, with hints of iridescence in the fields, a few minor breaks in the color on the obverse. One spot above Liberty's head, probably accounting for the grade, which is otherwise quite choice. Boldly impressed, to be sure, and all is as one would expect for the issue. One of the more common half cents in proof, and an affordable way to purchase a very early Philadelphia proof product. (PCGS# 1248)
