1841 1/2 C Original PR65 Brown NGC. B-1, R.6. Die State III. Distinguished as an original striking by the large berries on the reverse. The obverse shows a light crack from stars 3 through 7, but again, it is light, and a diagnostic characteristic. Original 1841s are considered R.6 and are among the most desirable of all proof Half Cents. Some two dozen specimens are believed to exist, perhaps six of these are impounded in museums with another four or five showing signs of circulation. This is a lovely piece that exhibits bright golden-brown color overall with a light overlay of mint-green in the fields. Nicely mirrored with the wide rims one expects of a proof striking, some of the denticulation is incomplete on each side. The only abrasions of note are seen in the obverse field near stars 11 and 12. Population: 4 in 65, 0 finer (7/03). (PCGS# 1254)

The obverse shows a light crack from stars 3 through 7, but again, it is light, as always on originals. Original 1841s are considered R.6 and are among the most desirable of all proof half cents. Some two dozen specimens are believed to exist, perhaps six of these are impounded in museums with another four or five showing signs of circulation. This is a lovely piece that exhibits even brown color overall with a slight accent of oil-slick patina in the fields. Nicely mirrored with the wide rims one expects of a proof striking. The only abrasion of note is a shallow contact mark above the N in CENT on the reverse. Population: 2 in 65, 1 finer (4/03). (PCGS# 1254)

1841 1/2 C Original. PO-2, B-1, R.6. PR63 Brown NGC. PR60 EAC. Small date; Large berries. The obverse is plated in the second edition of Cohen. A prominent die crack joins stars 3 through 6 and just misses star 7. Most examples of the 1840 and 1841 Original Half Cents show faint traces of edge reeding. Apparently the planchets were reeded, and then struck with a plain collar that crushed these edge reeds. Evidence can still be seen on those coins that have not been encapsulated. In his Complete Encyclopedia, Breen stated that about 24 examples of this variety were known to him. Today it is probably at the low end of the R.6 spectrum, with nearly 30 examples known. Dark walnut with pale steel-blue toning on the obverse. The reverse is exclusively dark walnut color. Light hairlines on both sides limit the grade of this example. Breen Die State III.

Originals from this year are considered R.6 and are among the most desirable of all proof half cents. Some two dozen specimens are believed to exist, perhaps six of these are impounded in museums with another four or five being impaired in varying degrees. Originals are considered R.6 and are among the most desirable of all proof half cents. Some two dozen specimens are believed to exist, perhaps six of these are impounded in museums with another four or five showing signs of circulation. There is a long die crack that runs from stars 3 to the rim above star 7, an indication of the early failure of this die. This is a deeply reflective striking and the surfaces show traces of original mint red color, that being overlaid with attractive blue-brown patina. An exquisite example of this rare proof half cent. 1841 1/2 C Original PR63 Brown PCGS. Breen-1, R.6. Die State III, with a slender die crack along the upper left obverse border. The 1841 Half Cent is the second date in a series of proof-only issues that ended in 1849, when business strike production resumed. Like the other proof issues from the 1840s, the 1841 is divided into Original and Restrike varieties, which are promptly distinguished by the size and shape of the wreath berries. Originals have large, round berries, and the Restrikes feature smaller, pellet-shaped berries. This needle-sharp and attractively preserved specimen displays deep ocean-blue, apple-green, and rose-violet hues when rotated beneath a light. Encapsulated in a prior generation green label PCGS holder. Population: 7 in 63, 8 finer (5/04).

1841 1/2 C Original PR65 Brown NGC. B-1, R.6. Die State III. The obverse die crack is quite faint yet fully visible. This same obverse die was also used to produced the restrike half cents; however, on those later pieces the die crack is much more prevalent. The proof-only years of United States half cents exist in several different series, including originals, first restrikes, and second restrikes. While the Original issues were, in fact, struck at the time of their dates, the restrikes were produced much later. We can learn much about early United States proof coins by studying these Original issues. Note in particular the depth of mirrored surface in the fields, and that this mirrored surfaces meets crisply with the edges of the various design elements. Also, note that the strike is extremely sharp. All of this is important, as it tells us exactly what to look for when authenticating any early U.S. coin as a proof strike. This particular specimen, in addition to the surfaces discussed above, has delicate green and iridescent toning with exceptional eye appeal. (PCGS# 1254)
