1849 First Restrike, Small Date, PR 65 Brown. B-2, High R.6. A sparkling jewel that boasts hints of original red on both sides, overlaid by a delicate patina of brown. One tiny spot resides between the feet of the first A of AMERICA, and a faint reddish pair are noted on the rim above N of UNITED and F of OF. One of the best preserved from this delightful run of proofs from Dr. Montgomery.

1849 1/2 C First Restrike. SR-11, B-2, High R.6. PR64 Brown NGC. PR60 EAC. Small date; Small berries, doubled T in CENT. This is the plate coin in the second edition of Cohen. The obverse is best described as having a small, heavy date, with each numeral heavily impressed and all four digits virtually touching each other. This is the only obverse die used for the Original and First Restrike Proofs, although a small number of Proofs are reported from the Large Date obverse of business strikes. There are still no reported examples of the 1849 Small Date variety in the form of a Second Restrike. Lightly reflective, but not deeply mirrored fields with light green and pale reddish-lilac coloration.

1849 Small Date, First Restrike PR 66 Brown NGC. Characterized as a first restrike by the doubled T in CENT, and a very rare issue in any grade. This is the only PR or MS 66 certified of this date, and thus is the finest known. Emerald-green patina is intermixed on each side with small portions of cherry-red giving the coin a pleasing iridescent quality. The mirrored fields are bright and little diminished by the subdued colors present over each side. The 1849 has long been considered the rarest of all the proof half cents from the 1840s. From the Benson Collection of Finest Known Type.

1849 1/2 C Restrike--Cleaned--ANACS. Proof, Net PR 60. B-2, High R.6. Lightly cleaned, the fields are reflective and the edges are squared off on each side, as only seen on proofs. The striking details are also unusually bold, again only as a proof could exhibit. Pale iridescence shows in the fields, otherwise the coin is predominantly brown. (PCGS# 1305)
