1796 1C Draped Bust, Reverse of 1794. S-111, B-17, Low R.5. AU50 NGC. VF25 EAC. Tied with two others for third finest of the variety. The variety is attributed by the low L in LIBERTY, the small die chip opposite the neck, and the small chips below the E of UNITED. The crack from the rim opposite the mouth to the edge of the jaw has become stronger, and a crack from the bust point to the rim is barely visible. The cracks through 96 of the date and from the top of the 6 to the drapery, as well as the crack from the rim through the right base of I of LIBERTY to the hair, are also apparent. Semi-glossy chocolate brown surfaces display well defined motifs that are generally well centered. A few minute marks on Liberty's neck are not bothersome. This one should bring a high price.

1796 1C Draped Bust, Reverse of 1794. S-110, B-16, High R.2--Reverse Damage--NCS. Unc Details. VF35 EAC. Del Bland suggested that this cent has the sharpness of AU55, has been cleaned and recolored, and has the obvious scratch at the upper reverse, through the letter F. The surfaces are pleasing light tan with some brighter copper color on the reverse. The terminal die state for the variety, with a heavy rim break over TY, and with several other obverse die cracks. Tied for ninth finest known, per Del Bland's Condition Census, and among the finest of this late die state.

1796 1C Draped Bust, Reverse of 1794. S-101, B-25, R.5. XF40 NGC. VF20 EAC. Die State II. Dark brown with a couple of small areas of reddish corrosion on the lower reverse and a couple of pits. One of the pits is on the lower right of the T of LIBERTY, another on the rim well above Liberty's bust. A faint scratch slides down Liberty's forehead to her shoulder, crossing a couple of others on her neck. On the reverse there is a faint scratch over ED S of UNITED STATES. Excellent quality for this or any variety, with decent eye appeal and minimal distractions for the grade. Listed as Fine 15 and tied for 11th in Del Bland's census. As a VF20, this would be tied for eighth best. Bill Noyes agrees with the Fine 15 grade, but he places this example in the eighth best position.

1796 1C Draped Bust, Reverse of 1794 VF35 PCGS. S-110, R.2. This is the most common die marriage of all 1796 Draped Bust large cents, an ideal choice for type collectors. All 1796 Draped Bust cents are scarce or rare, especially with high quality surfaces. The present example is a late die state with obverse and reverse die cracks, but it is not the terminal state of the variety. Pleasing pale green and olive-tan surfaces with a nice, smooth complexion. EAC 20.

1796 1C Draped Bust, Reverse of 1794 Fine 12 NGC. VG8 EAC. S-107, Die State II, High R.5. This late die state has a heavy rim break joining both serifs of Y to the border, and extending along the rim for several millimeters past 2 o'clock. This rim break is 8.75 mm. in length. This cent seems to fall at the low end of the Census. Del Bland placed this in a tie for seventh finest known at VG7, although he had not actually seen the coin. The next point, VG8, moves this up to a fifth place tie among the best known examples. Finest for the variety is just VF20. The surfaces are light tan in color, with considerable olive and steel toning. A few old dents and abrasions are present, along with some minor reverse scratches.

1796 1C Draped Bust, Reverse of 1794. S-102, B-26, R.4. Fine 12 NGC. Fine 15 EAC. Die State II. Dark mahogany brown and attractive for the grade, with even wear and minimal surface disturbances. Scattered nicks on the lower portion of the obverse, and there is a rim dent adjacent to the lowest ribbon end. On the reverse there are scattered handling nicks, and a small pit above the E of STATES. The dentils are worn on the right side of the reverse, sharp on the left.

1796 1C Draped Bust, Reverse of 1794. S-106, B-14, R.5--Corroded--NCS. XF Details. VF20 EAC. Very nearly in the Condition Census, and tied for seventh finest known according to Del Bland. The more conservative eye of Bill Noyes places this in a tie for 10th best of the variety. It is a remarkable example with exceptional design definition, and finely porous greenish-black surfaces. An early die state without any evidence of the obverse die crack from the rim to the bust, passing between the 7 and 9 in the date.

1796 1C Draped Bust, Reverse of 1794 AU Details NCS. Fine 15 EAC. S-110, Die State V, High R.2. This is the single most common 1796 Draped Bust variety, and this offering is an important opportunity for the date or type collector. This is a splendid example with grayish-brown coloration and excellent surfaces. Despite the NCS notation that the surfaces are corroded, we cannot see this, and the EAC grade is net without deductions. The C of AMERICA is missing, due to some sort of planchet flaw. NCS Corroded.

1796 1C Draped Bust, Reverse of 1794 VF20 NGC. Fine 12 EAC. S-108, Die State V, High R.3. Not the terminal die state for this variety, but nearly so. The obverse has a crack through 96 of the date, across the drapery, and into the right obverse field. The reverse has been ground down and has the right branch of the wreath separated from the ribbon knot. Attractive surfaces have medium brown color with a couple minor scratches and faint porosity on the reverse.

1796 1C Draped Bust, Reverse of 1794 Fine 12 NGC. VG10 EAC. S-102, Die State I, R.4. Rich, even brown patina covers each side of this evenly worn cent. Perhaps struck slightly out of alignment as the bottoms of the digits in the date and the tops of STA(TES) are a bit weak. No double profile is seen on this piece, a trait which is seen on several notable examples. There are the expected small abrasions on each side, none of which are large or obvious, the only mentionable defects being two planchet flaws on the nose and below the eye of Liberty.
