1796 1C Draped Bust, Reverse of 1797 MS64 Brown PCGS. S-119, B-40, R.3. Breen Die State II with no die break above the AT in STATES. A short but bold die line through the upper leaf tip opposite the R in AMERICA also confirms this popular "Nichols Find" marriage. The 6 is entered too high, and its knob partly overlaps the bust truncation.

This is a beautiful tan-brown piece with well struck borders and evenly impressed devices. The satiny surfaces are unperturbed, aside from a small medium brown spot in the field southeast of Liberty's chin, and an even more subtle maroon spot beneath the A in STATES. EAC 60.

1796 1C Draped Bust, Reverse of 1797 MS64 Brown PCGS. S-119, B-40, R.3. Breen Die State III with a five-dentil break above the AT in STATES. The leaf count, including the double leaf right wreath termination, identifies the Reverse of 1797 subtype. A lovely chocolate-brown representative of the fabled Nichols Find. The obverse has a few pinpoint carbon flecks, but marks are essentially absent, and the only spot is small, faint, and centered over the E in CENT. The grade is chiefly limited by the strike, which is crisp on the portrait and lower wreath but ONE CENT, STATES, and the date are somewhat soft. Certified in a green label PCGS holder. EAC 60.

1796 1C Draped Bust, Reverse of 1797 MS63 Brown PCGS. S-119, R.3. Die State III, rim break above AT in STATES. An impressive chestnut-brown representative that has consistent color and undisturbed surfaces. A limited area of slight mint-caused planchet roughness is noted above the hair ribbon, and a single small contact mark is concealed within the dentils at 2 o'clock, these inconsequential imperfections noted for pedigree purposes. Because of the alignment of the dies, the date, STATES, and nearby design elements are a bit softly defined, while opposite, LIBERTY and the fraction are crisp. Sheldon-119 is one of the three principal contributors to the Nichols hoard, a blessing for high grade type and date collectors of early coppers.

1796 1C Draped Bust, Reverse of 1797 MS61 Brown PCGS. S-119, R.3. The example offered here is a later die state with die cracks on the lower obverse and a tiny rim break can be seen in the dentils over TAT. Nearly all known examples of this die variety are high grade, and the present example follows this pattern. It is sharply struck with glossy chestnut surfaces and darker steel toning. The surfaces have myriad abrasions, mostly from the original planchet prior to striking. These coins survive from the Nichols Find, a cache of 1796 and 1797 large cents, all Mint State. The quantity of coins in this find, distributed in the 1860s, is not known. EAC 55.

1796 1C Draped Bust, Reverse of 1797 XF40 NGC. Fine 15 EAC. S-118, Die State I, High R.5. This variety was first publicized by George Clapp in the January 1934 issue of The Numismatist. In his article "New Varieties of 1796 Cents," Clapp described four different varieties of these cents, including Sheldon NC3, NC4, NC5, and S118 (this variety). He is not necessarily credited with discovery of these varieties; however, he was the first to publish descriptions. He correctly noted that the berry under the upright of D of UNITED is an instant identifier for the S-118 variety, as this berry position does not occur on any other Draped Bust large cent variety throughout the entire series from 1796 to 1807. This example is solidly within the Condition Census, being ranked as fifth finest known. This cent has splendid surfaces for the grade, far finer than the typical 1796 large cent encountered. Each side has medium brown mingled with slightly lighter tan, some pale orange on the reverse suggesting this may have been cleaned and recolored at some point in the past. The obverse has a thin line of lamination from the top of Liberty's head to the border just past 3 o'clock. This was called a scratch in the Robinson Brown sale, but we disagree with those findings.

1796 1C Draped Bust, Reverse of 1797 XF Details NCS. VF25 EAC. S-100, Die State I, Low R.5. Only five dies exist with this wreath design and a small fraction. The S-100 is the only Type of '97 Small Fraction with a close curved date. While noticeably sharper than the EAC grade, the surfaces are somewhat porous. The deep brown patina seen over most of each side displays little variation in hue over the highpoints, and there are no noticeable marks on either side of this Condition Census example. NCS Corroded.

Although this impressive chocolate-brown Cent is not fully struck, Liberty's hair has intricate definition, and only a trace of friction is observed on the leaves and portrait. Nearly free from contact, the faint striations that exist were generally on the planchet prior to the strike. A late die state with rim breaks above TA in AT in STATES. Sheldon-119 was part of the Nichols hoard, nonetheless, high quality pieces are under strong demand from type set collectors as well as specialists of the Draped Bust series. An important coin for early copper specialists, Tom Reynolds ranks this coin as Condition Census #3 for S-115 based on EAC grading standards. A solid Choice VF, both sides are toned in more or less even orange-brown patina with remarkably smooth surfaces for a coin that saw this extensive wear. Well detailed in most areas despite a little unevenness of strike at the left obverse border and in the center of the reverse.

1796 1C Draped Bust, Reverse of 1797. S-94, B-30, High R.5--Environmental Damage--NCS. VF Details. VG10 EAC. The usual die state. The surfaces are slightly rough from corrosion on both sides, and there are faint hairline scratches visible with a loupe where the fields were expertly smoothed. On the reverse there are a couple of minor rim ticks, one above the D of UNITED, the others between RI and above the C in AMERICA. A spot was probably scratched off from the center of E of CENT. Certainly a very scarce issue, and the present example is better than most survivors.

1796 1C Draped Bust, Reverse of 1797. NC-3, B-33, R.6--Corroded--NCS. AU Details. Fine 12 EAC. Attractive reddish-brown surfaces have been burnished to diminish visible porosity, yet some remains visible. Del Bland described this coin as "Sharpness of EF-40 but burnished with porosity still evident" and placed it in his Census as third finest known. Bill Noyes felt that a further reduction in the grade was necessary, and agreed that the sharpness is EF-40, but gave a net grade of Good 6, placing this specimen in his Census as sixth finest known. In either scenario, it is an important Condition Census example that should prove to be highly desired in the present sale. This die marriage has been known since it was discovered by Charles Clapp in 1924, yet to this day only 19 examples have been identified.

1796 1C Draped Bust, Reverse of 1797 MS61 Brown PCGS. S-119, R.2. Dr. Sheldon discussed the Nichols Find at length in Penny Whimsy: "Some time before 1863 there was dispersed a quantity of Mint State 1796 and 1797 cents, probably numbering as many as a thousand in all, which are traced to a bag brought in December 1797 from the Mint to his daughters by one Benjamin Goodhue, formerly of the Continental Congress. The name of Nichols Find was attached to these coins in the eighteen sixties and apparently arises from the fact that they were the property of the Nichols Family at the time of their dispersal to collectors, perhaps just prior to 1863. According to report, David Nichols of Gallows Hill, near Salem, Mass., passed them out at face value." Earlier, Walter Breen reported on these coins and this hoard in the January 1952 issue of The Numismatist. It is believed that all of these coins were minted in late 1797 and that they represented the first shipment of Boulton planchets from England. Much as expected, this cent has splendid surfaces with slightly reflective fields with gorgeous light tan and olive color. Myriad abrasions are visible in the fields, but these are almost all from the original flan and were produced during the planchet manufacturing process before the coin was struck. A couple additional planchet fissures and imperfections are visible on the obverse, notably including numerous tiny marks on Liberty's face and upper hair details, as well as roughness in the hair behind the neck. The trio of varieties that form the Nichols Find, 1796 S-119, 1797 S-123, and 1797 S-135, provide an ideal opportunity for the type coin aficionado. (PCGS# 1407)

1796 1C Draped Bust, Reverse of 1797. S-114, B-42, R.5. Fine 12 NGC. VG8 EAC. The top of the 6 in the date is punched over the drapery on this variety, 6 berries are on the left branch, with 5 on the right branch. This die state shows a heavy crack from the rim to the tops of TY in LIBERTY, then returning to the rim. Medium brown surfaces reveal just a few minor marks here and there, none of which are offensive. The design features are decently struck, and are well centered on the planchet. The dentilation is virtually complete on the reverse; the obverse dentils are weak or missing along the lower left (facing) border.

1796 1C Draped Bust, Reverse of 1797 AU Details NCS. XF45 EAC. S-119, Die State III, R.3. This is the plate coin in the Breen Large Cent Encyclopedia. This is one of the Nichols Find varieties, and is actually seen less often in higher circulated grades than in mint state. Pleasing light brown with some golden highlights, and some areas of darker brown toning. The coin is unevenly struck with considerable weakness, exhibiting numerous original planchet marks where not struck up. There is very little actual wear, with the areas that are struck more sharply having characteristics of a nearly mint state coin. A very attractive copper for one that has been "improperly cleaned." This is a wonderful candidate for the date or type collector. Given the number of high grade coins from the Nichols Find, prices for the next tier of cents from this die combination have remained at a reasonable level. NCS Improperly Cleaned.

The obverse has a single thin scratch that is now the same color as the surrounding surface and very difficult to see without the closest scrutiny. Perfect dies.
