1799/8 1C Fine 15 NGC. Fine 12 EAC. NC-1, R.7. The reverse of this coin was illustrated in both Early American Cents and Penny Whimsy. This piece was also illustrated in the Noyes book and is the plate coin in the Breen Large Cent Encyclopedia. It is also the discovery coin for the variety, and was first identified by Dr. Sheldon among coins in the Geiss Collection sale. Apparently Sheldon must have kept to himself until after he was able to secure the coin for his own collection. Later in 1947, he turned down an offer of $2,000 from George H. Clapp. It was a dozen years before another example was identified. Just six more examples have turned up in the past four and a half decades. The Census for these eight coins is 12, 7, 5 (3), 3 (2), 2. We have to believe that nearly every higher grade 1799 overdate cent has been examined by this time, and that the chances of a new discovery exceeding this for grade is slim. Over the years, this is only the sixth time that any example of this variety has been sold at public auction with proper attribution. The other auction appearances realized the following prices: Fair 2 (1/75) $1,900; Fair 2 (1/86) $1,870; VG7 (9/86) $5,500; Good 5 (9/98) $6,612.50; Fine 12 (1/96) $30,800. The trend is ever increasing prices for this rarity, and we fully expect that the present sale will set a new record for this variety. In a recent conversation, Wes Rasmussen mentioned that this is his favorite coin in the collection. Mr. Holmes, you may already own one, but this is a nine-point upgrade. Mr. Husak, what a nice match for your other coins. Mr. Wadlington, here's another finest known rarity for your collection. To everyone else, come join the fun.

This is a wonderful coin for the grade, with even medium olive-brown color on both sides. The surfaces have microscopic roughness, however, they are much finer than normally encountered for the date, regardless of variety. In fact, this coin would be far above average (PCGS# 1446)

1799/8 1C Fine 15 NGC. Fine 12 EAC. S-188, Die State II, Low R.4. The 1799 overdate cent, Sheldon-188, was coined from a reverse die that was later used to produce the 1798 S-186 variety. Take a look at the S-186 in this sale, and note the heavy die crack at lower right, terminating at 6 o'clock with a heavy rim break. You will not see any trace of such a die crack on this, or any 1799 overdate, except for the six known late die state coins that also have a heavy obverse die crack. Not only is this important for the Mint historian looking to establish the order that of striking at the first Mint, but it is also extremely important knowledge for the authenticator. It would be impossible to produce an altered date 1799/8 cent from a previous 1798 large cent. If the correct reverse were chosen, it would have the very heavy reverse crack, but no obverse die crack. Any other reverse will be easily disproven as it would not match the proper diagnostics for the genuine.

This lovely cent has wonderful surfaces on each side, with intermingled tan and darker brown color with a trace of olive. A few very minor surface marks are noted with all of these completely consistent with the grade. An extremely important opportunity for the advanced collector.

1799/8 1C --Corroded--NCS. VF Details. S-188, B-2, R.4. The surfaces on both sides of this nicely detailed example have deep olive-brown surfaces with scattered dark emerald corrosion on each side. However, the overall appearance is that of a pleasing, lightly circulated large cent. Although not a problem free example, it is a specimen that needs no apologies. Clearly, most collectors would be proud to own this example. Although the lower obverse and upper reverse borders are not complete, the date is full and the overdate feature is visible without magnification. A small planchet lamination is evident over ME of AMERICA, possibly serving as a pedigree marker. By strict standards of copper collectors, we suggest that this piece has the details of VF20 with light porosity. EAC 8. (PCGS# 1446)

1799/8 1C VG10 ANACS. S-188, R.4. Evenly worn overall, the surfaces retain at least outline definition over all major design elements. Although the peripheral lettering is starting to wear into the rims, the legend UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, the word LIBERTY, and the date are all discernible. Both sides are richly toned in dark brown and crimson shades, the scattered distractions include a small planchet void (as produced) in the left obverse field.

1799/8 1C VG 10. S-188, R.4. A pleasant chocolate-brown example of this ever-popular issue with minor distractions that do not limit the desirability of the coin. The surfaces appear smooth at first glance, although they are microscopically granular under magnification. There are two thin pinscratches of antique origin that intersect on the obverse in the hair behind Liberty's neck, but these are not appreciably detrimental to the overall eye appeal. Several other abrasions are evident on each side that are consistent with considerable time spent in the channels of commerce.

The 1799 issue (both the overdate and plain varieties) has long been in demand by date collectors and specialists as the scarcest large cent by date, and those in hobby circles were aware of this fact as early as the 1850s. It has been reported that early numismatic entrepreneurs would travel the countryside in New England and the Middle Atlantic states in wagons with large signs advertising the fact that they would pay up to $25 for cents from 1799, a considerable sum of money for the time. The mystique and lore of the issue has never subsided, and today every serious collector of early copper coinage desires to own an example. (PCGS# 1446)

1799/8 1C --Corroded--ANACS. VF20 Details. S-188, B-2, R.4. Scarcer than the normal date S-189, and a key (along with the 1793) to a date collection of large cents. All letters are legible aside from the O in OF, and Liberty has substantial hair and eye detail. The dark brown surfaces are consistently granular, but the only relevant mark is a subdued obverse pinscratch near 4 o'clock. EAC 8. (PCGS# 1446)

1799/8 1C NC-1, B-1, R.7--Damaged--NCS. Good Details. Fair 2 EAC. Even though the obverse has heavy dents, scrapes, and rim bruises, the lovely medium brown color helps to diminish the appearance of the damage. One of the rim bruises is located directly below the date, obliterating the bottoms of 179, the final digit and the overdate are fully visible and complete. Several attribution points are clearly visible on the reverse. The lowest inside berry is on a short stem, the bottom of C in CENT is blunt and squared, and the pair of leaves above E in ONE has a stem.

Although this variety has been known for nearly 60 years, having been discovered by Dr. Sheldon in the Frederic Geiss Collection (B. Max Mehl, 2/1947), only eight examples have been located to date. Years of discovery for the eight known examples were 1947 (still the finest known), 1958, 1972 (this example), 1977, 1992, 1995, 1997, 1999. This data tells us two things: first, the opportunity to cherrypick an example is highly unlikely, and second, many more people are searching for this variety now than ever before, with half of the known population discovered in the last 14 years. If you have been unsuccessfully searching for an unattributed example for your collection, you may wish to consider this coin from the Reiver Collection. It was the third example to be discovered and has a respectable pedigree of characters.

1799/8 1C VG Details, Damaged, NCS. S-188, R.4. Tougher than the Normal Date Sheldon-189, the 1799/8 tops the want list of many advanced early copper specialists. This medium brown representative exhibits greater wear on the UNI in UNITED, but the legends are otherwise clear. The lightly granular surfaces are typically abraded. The obverse rim has minor dings at 3, 4, and 5 o'clock. The reverse rim is dinged at 12 and 4 o'clock and has relatively heavy bruises at 1:30, 2, and 10 o'clock.
