1800/1798 1C First Hair Style AU Details NCS. Fine 15 EAC. NC-6, High R.6. This cent remains the finest known from a total population of just 13 coins. In 1969, Stack's failed to recognize this very example as a new variety and offered it in the Miles Collection sale as a Sheldon-190, where it realized $170. This example has considerably finer sharpness, but has been repaired at D ST on the reverse. Only one other example of this variety grades better than Good. While the variety was not actually "discovered" until the early 1970s, it is possible that Charles McGirk recognized this die combination when he published his large cent notes in the early 20th century. He described a variety with this Head of '97 obverse die, in combination with a reverse different than either S-190 or S-191. The surfaces have attractive olive and tan coloration; some lighter orange on the reverse suggests this cent may have been cleaned and retoned after the repair work. NCS Reverse Repaired.

1800/1798 1C First Hair Style. NC-6, B-4, High R.6. VG10 NGC. VG7 EAC. This is the second finest known for the variety, behind the VF25 example that we sold as part of the Wes Rasmussen Collection last January. It is the plate coin in Breen. This coin, from the Robinson Brown Collection sold by Superior in 1986, is generally considered to have the nicest surface quality of any example among the 13 coins currently known. In fact, it is the only example listed by Bill Noyes with the sharpness and net EAC grade equivalent.

1800/1798 1C First Hair Style AU53 NGC. S-191, R.3. The diagnostic die failure on the reverse is in its early stages. While displaying the crack through the final A of AMERICA to the ribbon tip and beyond, there is less evidence of the bulge that eventually almost obliterates the denomination than is later seen. Weakness over the corresponding area of the obverse at the tops of BER is also noted. Medium to dark brown surfaces are otherwise well detailed and are high enough grade for the overdate feature to be clearly discernible. This obverse has the first hair style that was in use from 1796 through the middle of 1798. The curved tail to R in LIBERTY dates this obverse to the latter part of that series, and was produced either late in the production of 1797 large cents, or at the time of the earlier 1798 obverse dies with the same letter style. For unknown reasons, this die was not placed in service at the time, and finally saw use with these 1800 overdate cents. From an EAC perspective, just outside of Condition Census quality. 1800/1798 1C First Hair Style. S-190, B-5, High R.2--Improperly Cleaned--NCS. VF Details. VF20 EAC. An early die state with minor obverse clash marks but no evidence of die rust on either side. Medium olive and mahogany surfaces with good eye appeal. The surfaces are typically abraded, and the only evidence that this example may have been cleaned and retoned is some faint orange color on the obverse, through the date and around the devices.

Bill Noyes has assigned a conservative VG10 grade to this example, and he recorded it as tied for 22nd finest in his list. Once again, this example illustrates that grading is truly subjective, with each person having there own opinion, even among the experts. Regardless of which grade you prefer, be it the grade of Del Bland, Mark Borckardt, Denis Loring, Bill Noyes, or any of the grading services, the best we can all hope for is that each individual applies their particular standards in a consistent manner. If you, as a collector, are aware of how your own personal grading standards compare to the opinions of others, you can gain a good understanding of a given coins grade, as long as consistency is maintained. 1800/1798 1C First Hair Style. XF Details NCS. VF25 EAC. S-191, Die State VI, R.3. The reverse has several prominent die bulges and die cracks with considerable die failure at the denominator and below the right ribbon. This obverse has the first hair style that was in use from 1796 through the middle of 1798. The curved tail to R in LIBERTY dates this obverse to the latter part of that series, and was produced either late in the production of 1797 large cents, or at the time of the earlier 1798 obverse dies with the same letter style. For unknown reasons, this die was not placed in service at the time, and finally saw use with these 1800 overdate cents. This cent has pleasing chocolate-brown and steel color with hints of reddish-brown patina. There is a tiny edge dent at the top of the obverse along with a few other minute surface marks. The reverse has a small patch of raised corrosion. ER of LIBERTY are weakly defined, being opposite the raised mounds on the reverse. NCS Environmental Damage.

This is a sharply defined example of the late die state with extensive bulges on the reverse, and with die cracks at the lower right, through ERICA and the fraction. Extremely dark steel color with minor porosity and verdigris. Despite the imperfections, this is an attractive example. Jules recorded on his envelope that this coin has a perfect reverse, which is clearly not the case.

1800/1798 1C VF35 Uncertified. S-190, High R.2. Both sides of this crimson-brown example exhibit bold definition in the centers that wanes slightly toward the rims. The wear is light (for the grade) and not overly distracting. There is some porosity in the planchet that is most readily evident in the right obverse field, scattered abrasions are also seen on both sides. Nevertheless, this is a desirable coin with a bold underdigit beneath the 8 in the date. (PCGS# 1452)
