1805 1C MS65 Brown NGC. MS60 EAC. S-267, Die State III, R.1. Mint records indicate a total production of 941,116 large cents in 1805, although it is almost certain that many of these were dated 1803 or 1804. In fact, it may be entirely possible that all cents struck in 1804 were dated 1803, and that the entire production of 1804-dated large cents was actually coined in 1805. These are details we will never be able to answer. An example of Die State III in its most advanced stage, with a few of the characteristics of State IV. The reverse border has very little detail, with only a trace of dentils at lower left. Sharply defined with only slight weakness among the lower hair curls, and among a few of the leaves on the reverse. This is a wonderful Gem, and based on EAC grading is tied with four others for honors as the second finest 1805 large cent of any variety. Only the Eliasberg specimen of this variety is clearly finer, and even that coin is only marginally better. The lustrous surfaces have splendid olive-brown color with traces of original red.

1805 1C MS62 Brown PCGS. S-269, R.1. BDS IV. The only variety of 1805 Cents with a pointed upper serif on the 1 in the date. Bold clash marks (as made) are encountered below Liberty's hair ribbon and in front of her profile, and a heavy die line (as struck) is also noted near Liberty's ribbon. Generally chocolate-brown in color, with the portrait mostly toned medium-brown, although Liberty's upper hair and the borders near 9 o'clock offer a hint of lilac verdigris. A well struck representative that is virtually free from contact. Population: 6 in 62, 5 finer (11/05).

1805 1C AU53 NGC. VF30 EAC. S-268, Die State III, R.3. In the 1949 publication of Early American Cents, Dr. Sheldon rated this variety as R.6 and stated that he had not seen more than a dozen examples. Nine years later in the 1958 edition of his work, retitled Penny Whimsy, Sheldon noted that the rarity was "overestimated in EAC. Quite a flurry of these have turned up in recent years." Years later, Walter Breen called this R.3, but we feel that he may have gone too far in the other direction. Our experience, as well as the low Condition Census, points to a variety that is most likely a solid R.4. As a VF30, this example is tied for 10th finest known in a census that lists AU50 and XF40 as the two finest known examples. This cent has lovely mottled olive, chestnut, and cocoa-brown color with a couple splashes of reddish-orange. The surfaces, especially on the obverse, have light handling marks that are entirely consistent with the grade.

1805 1C MS61 Brown NGC. S-267, R.1. Blunt 1 in date, and small fraction, with the fraction bar entirely to the right of the 1. Medium brown patination is noted over each side, along with accents of steel-blue; some orange is also noted on the reverse. The design elements are well centered on the planchet, and generally nicely impressed, with most of Liberty's hair strands delineated, though the lowest curl is a touch soft. A few minor handling marks are visible on each side, but none are worthy of individual mention, and there is no significant spotting. EAC 40. (PCGS# 1510)

The surfaces are slightly porous and show deep-brown to charcoal-brown color over both sides. Traces of wear are noted on Liberty's hair, with no detracting abrasions observed on either obverse or reverse. Scattered tiny planchet flaws are seen chiefly on the lower right side of the obverse. 1805 1C AU55 NGC. XF40 EAC. S-269, Die State IV, R.1. Although S-267 and S-269 are both considered Rarity-1 varieties, this S-269 is much scarcer. Of all 1805 large cents, perhaps 70% are S-267, 25% are S-269, and the remaining 5% are S-268. When Denis Loring bought this coin, it was to resell to a local dealer, but his envelope tells the rest of the story: "Bought at a local show to sell to Worthy, but the color was nicer than my incumbent 1805. So I'm -$175 instead of +$20. That's the way it goes in this business." The color is special, indeed. A base of olive-brown serves as a backdrop for chocolate brown and lighter gold, faded from original red. This is sharply struck and nicely centered. The surfaces are choice with few blemishes of any sort.

1805 1C AU53 PCGS. S-269, R.1. The only variety of 1805 Cents with a pointed upper serif on the 1 in the date, and also exhibits a die break from the hair ribbon extending into the hair above the outer upper curl. This lightly circulated example displays medium tan and orange patination, with splashes of steel blue on Liberty's neck and chest. The design elements display relatively sharp definition, and are fairly well centered on the planchet. The surfaces are quite clean, but illustrate a few small indentions in the left (facing) obverse field, and a couple of minute rim bruises at 3 o'clock on the obverse. (PCGS# 1510)
