1837 1C Head of 1838 MS66 Brown NGC. MS63 EAC. N-9, Late Die State, R.1. The Head of 1838 is also known as the Beaded Hair Cords type, for the hair cords that bind the inner and outer hairbuns. On this variety, the inner hair cord has five individual beads while the outer hair cord has ten beads. A late die state, recorded by Newcomb as obverse State VI and reverse State III, which is the latest die state that he listed in his reference. The obverse is plated in Newcomb. The surfaces are olive-brown with lighter yellowish toning on the devices. Considerable original mint red is visible on the obverse. A lovely example that was good enough for Floyd Starr and Howard Newcomb, this cent should be a welcome addition to any advanced cabinet.

1837 MS 65 Brown NGC. Plain Hair Cords, Large Letters. N-7, R.1. EAC graded MS 62. Lovely medium-light brown and mint red color with light steel-blue overtones. The only defects on this glossy coin are: a tiny edge nick left of star 7, some microscopic specks in the left obverse field, and a thin line of foreign matter through star 9. (PCGS# 1729)

1837 1C Head of 1838 MS64 Brown NGC. MS60+ EAC. N-12, R.3. This is the scarcest 1837 Beaded Hair Cords variety and is tied for sixth finest known, per Del Bland's notes. Characteristics of both early and later die states are evident on this example, including minor rim crumbling below the date. Lovely olive-brown and mint red obverse surfaces are combined with bluish-brown and mint red reverse surfaces.

All die cracks are further advanced, and the quality of this example allows these cracks to be viewed across the devices as well as in the fields. The obverse has a couple small rim breaks outside the dentils, along with a small broken section on the bust tip. Splendid medium brown surfaces with hints of red mint color.
