1837 1C Plain Cords, Medium Letters MS66 Red and Brown PCGS. N-7, R.1. A bold die crack journeys across STATES OF and the L and I of LIBERTY are well separated. Luster ripples across the reddish-tan and light brown colors on each side. For pedigree purposes, a couple of tiny spots of discoloration are noted adjacent to the first S of STATES.

1837 1C Medium Letters MS66 Red and Brown PCGS. We wholeheartedly recommend this coin to certified type collectors who value eye appeal as well as technical quality. Mostly glossy in texture, the surfaces display well blended orange-red luster and medium brown toning. There is not a single blemish that is worthy of mention--an expected feature for the assigned grade--but we do note an as struck die break through the words STATES and OF at the upper reverse border. The strike is bold, if not sharp in most areas. The single finest PCGS-certified example with a Red and Brown color designation (10/02). (PCGS# 1736)

1837 1C Plain Cords, Medium Letters MS66 Red and Brown NGC. N-6, Low R.2. An interesting example from a year in which the cent was the only copper denomination coined. The smooth surfaces are largely blue and lavender, along with a generous portion of pumpkin-orange. Aside from a few minor flaws near the numerals of the date, the fields and the robustly struck devices are astonishingly close to perfect. EAC 63.

This is a late die state with heavy radial flowlines around the entire border on both sides, imparting an especially lustrous appearance. 1837 1C Medium Letters MS63 Red and Brown NGC. MS63 EAC. N-1, Usual Die State, R.3. Fourth or fifth finest known according to Del Bland's Census notes. A couple Gem quality examples have not been seen for several decades, thus the exact position of this example in the Condition Census is not known. What is known is that this is an extremely important opportunity for specialists to acquire one of the finest available examples of the N-1 die combination. This is the second use of the obverse die, and radial flowlines weaken the appearance of the die cracks. The surfaces are fully lustrous with considerable mint color on the obverse and traces of faded orange on the reverse. Elsewhere, the dominant color is olive with some steel-brown. In the Dupont catalog, Dr. Sheldon noted a faint scratch before the face, but this is invisible at most angles. A wonderful coin with considerable eye appeal.
