1855 1C Upright 5s MS66 Red and Brown PCGS. N-4, R.1. The variety is confirmed by two relatively large lumps near jawline left of earlobe, and another two on the neck. Considerable mint orange color bathes the obverse, while the reverse displays a melange of orange, crimson, and electric-blue. The design elements are sharply struck, except that most of the star centers are soft. The surfaces are devoid of any significant abrasions or specks. this coin exudes great overall eye appeal. Population: 2 in 66, 0 finer (11/05).

1855 1C Upright 5s MS66 Red and Brown NGC. N-4, R.1. An early striking without the peripheral die cracks on the reverse. Tiny die lumps on the portrait confirm the die marriage. The radiant orange color is especially pervasive on the reverse, although Liberty has acquired light lilac patina. NGC has certified five Cents as Newcomb-4 with 66 Red and Brown color, and none have been graded finer (11/03).
Ex: John Jay Pittman Collection, Part One (10/1997), lot 273. Pittman had purchased the Cent for $3.85 on an unknown date. (PCGS# 1908)

1855 MS 65 Red and Brown. Upright 5s. N.5, High R.5. A pleasing coin whose glossy surfaces retain much mint red, especially on the obverse. The reverse is mostly brown. Well struck and defect-free, the coin shows no apparent carbon spotting. Undoubtedly the finest known example of this rare variety, the second finest piece grades MS 61. This piece, like many of the other early coppers in this sale, has been off the market since the 1930s in a New York collection. (PCGS# 1908)

Extensive orange-red color illuminates the obverse, while the reverse features intermingled golden-brown and steel-gray colors. The upper stars are typically struck, but the portrait is crisp. The highest graded among five Cents certified by NGC as Newcomb-2. (PCGS# 1908)
