1860 1C Pointed Bust MS66 PCGS. The Pointed Bust design had been in use on patterns since 1858, but was changed early in the year, possibly to increase die life. Business strikes are quite scarce with an estimated mintage of only half a million out of the more than 20 million coins produced in 1860. Snow states that most of the Uncirculated specimens that are known come from a hoard of 25-50 pieces. This is a fully struck example that has light lemony-yellow surfaces that show just a hint of red. The obverse appears immaculate and we only see two tiny marks on the reverse. Population: 3 in 66, 0 finer (1/03).

1860 1C Pointed Bust MS65 PCGS. This beautiful example has a full strike and nearly flawless, satiny surfaces. The color is a pleasing blend of honey-tan and lilac shades. A light reverse abrasion is noted, and a planchet void on the same side near the arrows is noted as a pedigree marker. We stress that the latter feature is a Mint made anomaly that has no effect on the coin's grade.

Until the early 1990's the 1860 Pointed Bust was considered to be very rare, and it was listed in Breen's 1988 Encyclopedia as such. By estimating the mintage based on the number of die pairs seen (six), the current belief is that about 500,000 Pointed Bust Cents were produced in 1860. This estimate represents approximately 1/20th of the entire mintage. The "Pointed Bust" style refers to the narrower bust truncation that was used on all regular issue 1859 Cents. Hence, one may also label this variety as the "Type of 1859." The Mint seems to have redesigned the Indian Cent to the Broad Bust early in 1860. Perhaps the six known obverse dies that struck the 1860 Pointed Busts were undated dies leftover from 1859. In any event, this variety was struck in large enough quantities to satisfy most collector demand, but in small enough numbers to make it one of the key dates of the series.

Starting in 1994, this type was included in the Guide Book of United States Coins, commonly referred to as the "Red Book." Since then, collectors have started including this coin in their sets, many of which were previously thought to be complete. The future owner would be advised to have PCGS relabel the insert to include the Pointed Bust designation. Population: 10 in 65, with a mere three finer (10/02).

It is estimated that approximately 500,000 pieces, or five percent of the total mintage of the Indian Cents produced in 1860 were struck from the Pointed Bust, or Type One, hub variety. Although Snow speaks of a hoard of 25-50 coins that came to light before he published his 1992 book, this variety is still scarce to rare in all grades. This desirable Gem example is particularly sharp in all areas and displays traces of orange-gold patina are seen over satiny surfaces. Population: 11 in 65, 4 finer (4/03). (PCGS# 2056)

1860 1C Pointed Bust MS65 PCGS. FS-006.4. Out of the 20.5 million pieces struck of this date, only half a million are believed to have been produced from the Pointed Bust, or Type One, hub. As a result, such pieces are quite rare, especially in Gem condition, with only 13 other coins having been so graded by PCGS and five finer (10/03). This is a well struck example that has light, subtly variegated gray-tan and rose coloration over each side. Virtually free from carbon specks. (PCGS# 2056)

This lustrous and well struck Gem has subtle blue accents in the center, while the outer bands are peach with a hint of yellow. 1860 1C Pointed Bust MS65 PCGS. It has been speculated that the six dies that were used to strike the known 1860 Pointed Bust cents may have actually been leftover from 1859. This is a very small number of dies (and coins) used to strike the total mintage of 36.4 million pieces in this year. 1860 1C Pointed Bust MS65 PCGS. This is an important opportunity for the advanced collector. The Pointed Bust variety of this date is seldom seen in any grade, and is rare in Gem quality. This is from the first obverse hub in use, later being replaced by the Rounded Bust hub. Walter Breen wrote in his Complete Encyclopedia that both proofs and business strikes were known, however, no proofs have been located. This Gem has wonderful frosty tan luster with some weakness of strike noticed at the top of each feather in the headdress. The fields are immaculate, and only the most trivial imperfections are found on the portrait. Population: 22 in 65, 5 finer (12/04). (PCGS# 2056)
