1873 1C Open 3 MS66 Red PCGS. The relatively low mintage for the 1873 issue is further divided into Closed 3, Open 3, and Doubled LIBERTY varieties. While the Open 3 is not rare in lower grades, only a tiny fraction of the survivors can match the reddish-copper and golden-copper color and exquisite surfaces of the present lustrous Gem. Well struck with immense eye appeal. For pedigree purposes, an opaque toning spot is seen within the O of ONE. Population at both services combined: 5 in 66, none are finer (11/05).

1873 1C Open 3 MS65 Red PCGS. While appreciably more common than the 1873 Closed 3, the Open 3 is still a scarce issue in the finer Mint State grades. A high end coin for the grade, both sides display bountiful mint luster in cherry-red shades. There are no problems with the strike, all features being sharp, and the surfaces are smooth with a pleasingly frosted texture. Typically distraction-free for the assigned grade. Population: 20 in 65 Red, three are finer (10/02).

1873 1C Open 3 MS65 Red PCGS. Eagle Eye Photo Seal. While the more frequently encountered of the two date variants of the year, both Open and Closed 3 varieties have been collected for many years. Chief Coiner A. L. Snowden brought it to the attention of his superiors in January that it appeared that the mint was striking 1878 dated coins five years too early! As a result, a new date punch was created with a more open and easily discernible 3. This is a solidly graded coin that shows even, light red color over both sides and no obvious abrasions are apparent without magnification (and then they are still tiny). Sharply struck throughout with strong definition on the feather tips as well as the shield on the reverse. Population: 20 in 65, 3 finer (1/03).

The strike is well above-average and only a few trivial flecks of carbon are noted here and there. 1873 1C Open 3 MS65 Red NGC. Doubled L. Snow-2. A "very scarce" variety, according to Snow (1992), the L in LIBERTY is doubled north. Although this feature is not readily evident without a loupe, the other diagnostic of this variety is: a die chip behind Liberty's eye can be seen on the present Gem. This orange-red example is richly frosted with a bold overall strike and no distracting abrasions to report. Comfortably graded at the MS65 Red level with eye appeal to spare. Population: 5 in 65, only 1 finer (4/02).
