1870 2C PR67 Brown★ NGC. This Superb Gem is the only proof 1870 two cent piece given the Star Designation in any grade or color category (7/06). This beautiful, intricately detailed specimen has gorgeous blue and magenta overtones on moderate to dark brown surfaces. While NGC has certified two others of this issue as Proof 67 Red, it is hard to imagine either of them matching the incredible eye appeal of this coin, worthy of the collection of any collector of this series. 1870 2C PR66 Brown NGC. The smooth, pristine, glossy surfaces are mottled olive-brown with glints of red and essentially contact-free. Although 1,000 proofs are thought to have been produced, the Guide Book numbers for these pieces are estimates, and the two cent proofs in choice condition as a whole are severely underrated. Attractive proof Brown- and Red and Brown-designated pieces may be obtained for a fraction of the price of Red examples. The ornament under W is incomplete, and the shield stripes are a trifle weak in the center, as made, from die lapping. Despite the Brown designation, considerable red remains on the reverse, and the strike is extremely sharp. Census: 4 in 66 Brown, 1 finer (6/06). (PCGS# 3642)
