1855 3CS MS66 PCGS. Three Cent Silvers of the Type Two design are the most conditionally challenging issues in the series. Coins of this type were produced from 1854 through 1858, and the 1855 boasts the lowest mintage of this era at 139,000 pieces. Easily qualifying for Condition Census standing, the surfaces of this golden tinged Gem are silky smooth with rippling mint luster. The strike is a little soft in select peripheral areas, but the centers are sharp, and all major features are readily evident. NGC and PCGS combined have seen only nine coins in MS66 and none finer (1/03). (PCGS# 3671)

1855 3CS MS65 PCGS. As a type, the Three Cent Silvers of 1854-1858 are difficult to locate in the finer Mint State grades. The 1855 is the lowest mintage date in this run with just 139,000 pieces delivered. This is a gorgeous Gem whose richly frosted surfaces reveal lovely olive, russet, and orange shadings toward the rims. The surfaces are devoid of even a single distracting blemish, and clashmarks (as struck, and not uncommon for the type) in the center of the reverse are noted solely for accuracy. Population: only four in 65, with another four finer (1/03).

NGC 1855 MS 66. One of, if not the finest example of this key date Type Two issue known to exist. The luster on this incredible coin is nothing short of scintillating, being fully brilliant and white, showing as much vibrancy as we have ever seen on a three-cent silver of this type. Equally impressive are the strike and surface quality, with only minor die clashing noticed on the reverse. Population: 1 in 66, none tied or higher by either service. (PCGS# 3671)

1855 MS 66 NGC. Ex: Dawson. This coin typifies the collecting method of Andre Dawson in assembling his superb type set. Each coin selected as the representative for the type was of uncommonly high quality. But that has been done before. What Dawson did was to select a better (or rare) date within the type, and pursue that issue in high grade. Quite a novel idea, and one that placed quite a few coins in this auction as so-called type pieces that are really better date issues.
The 1855 is certainly a better date than the most commonly encountered issue within the Type Two series, the 1857. And here we have this better date in exceptionally attractive, high grade condition. The fields are bright and shimmer with intense, semi-prooflike intensity. While not especially noteworthy on other coins, we call attention to it here not only because of the brightness of the lustrous flash, but also because of the deep blue, rose, and charcoal-gray patina that is splashed across each side. Such deep colorations would greatly subdue what mint luster would be present on many coins, but here it has no dampening effect. Die clashed, as always, the surfaces are free from any troubling abrasions. A bit of softness is noted at the peripheries, this being the closest we can find to a defect. Population: 3 in 66, none are finer (6/98). (PCGS# 3671)

1855 3CS Doubled Date. MS64 Prooflike NGC. Breen-2920. The presently offered example constitutes a vexing conundrum for the numismatist: was it made as a proof or is it simply a prooflike business strike? There would probably be no consensus among experienced numismatists. Those supporting a proof attribution would emphasize the mirror fields and cameo contrast as mentioned above; those favoring a prooflike attribution would point to softness at the base of the date and the flatness of some of the peripheral reverse stars. Lamentably, this is just one of many numismatic questions that will probably never be resolved to everyone's satisfaction. A handsome example toned in intermingled hues of blue and gold. The fields are reflective and the devices show substantial cameo contrast. Despite the considerable peripheral weakness that flattens the lower part of the date, considerable doubling is visible, more than is seen on most business strike examples of this date. Jules Reiver included this as part of his collection of proof three-cent silver pieces. (PCGS# 3671)

This is a lustrous Gem that shows rich blue toning on the obverse with a golden tinted reverse. Fully struck, and quite unusual as such, light die clashing is seen on each side, a common occurrence on Three Cent Silvers. Population: 6 in 65, 5 finer (2/03). (PCGS# 3671)
