1880 3CN MS67 PCGS. Unusually well struck and undisturbed for a business strike, although the potent cartwheel luster confirms the designation as a Mint State piece. A pair of tiny laminations (as made) southwest of the F in OF identify this superlative Superb Gem, which displays light gold color. Just 21,000 business strikes were struck, and unlike proofs of the same date, not many pieces were set aside by contemporary numismatists. Population: 29 in 67, 0 finer (1/05).

Business strike production of the Three Cent Nickel had already begun to wane by the 1880s, although it enjoyed a brief one-year revival in 1881 before declining again. A few hundred high grade Uncirculated examples were apparently hoarded from the original mintage of 21,000 pieces, of which this coin is certainly among the finest to have survived. 1880 3CN MS67 PCGS. A scarce and desirable year for this business strike. The popularity of this odd coin was waning and Philadelphia ordered only about 20,000 pieces struck. This piece exhibits deep, satiny luster over seemingly pristine surfaces. Faint russet toning streaks cover each side. The strike is razor-sharp on both sides with nearly full denticulation. A wispy planchet streak (as struck) resides just left of the second Roman numeral I on the reverse, and a smaller planchet flaw (also as struck) is seen directly below and to the right of the F in OF, on the upper obverse. These features do very little to diminish the appeal of this conditionally scarce Superb Gem, which remains highly attractive and very desirable as an addition to any high grade type collection. A lustrous and needle-sharp Superb Gem with exquisite preservation. The lowest portion of the wreath and ribbon are attenuated, as made due to a polished die. A low mintage issue.
