NGC 1879 PR 68. Only one word is needed to describe the brilliance of this remarkable proof three-cent nickel: Wow! The 1879 proof is just another date in the three-cent nickel series, not overly scarce, even in grades as high as PR 66. The buck, however, really slows down there and comes to a stop in PR 68 condition. In fact, for the entire run of dates in which NGC has graded over 5,000 proofs, just two coins have been awarded a PR 68 rating, this and an 1881. If only the finest will do, consider it done. 1879 3CN PR68 PCGS. Blended apricot and gunmetal-gray colors enlighten this intricately struck and immaculate Superb Gem. Business strikes resumed in 1879 after a two year hiatus, but these are so scarce in finer grades that many collectors choose a proof to represent the date. As of (1/05), the present specimen is tied with one other piece as the highest certified by PCGS, although that service shows a population of 24 pieces as PR67 Cameo.
