1815 25C MS68 NGC. B-1, R.1. Die State II. Only one variety is known of this important date. The mintage comprised 69,232 pieces that were delivered December 16 of 1815, and 20,003 coins delivered January 10, 1816, which was the first day after Mint reopened and the day before the fire which destroyed the apparatus for making gold and silver planchets. As a result of the fire the following day, no quarters were struck in 1816 or 1817. This is by far the finest example known of this popular and widely collected date. The Condition Census as listed in the 1992 edition of Browning is (65, 64, 64, 64, 64, 63-seven pieces). As a Die State II coin the fields show evidence of die clashing. However, aside from these clash marks there is virtually nothing that interrupts the flow of the thick, frosted mint luster that covers each side. Both obverse and reverse are deeply patinated with gray and emerald-green centers that are surrounded by a deep scarlet-gray toning around the margins. The striking definition is strong throughout with even pressure applied to all the design elements. An extraordinary coin and a singular opportunity for the type or date collector. (PCGS# 5321)

1815 25C E Countermark MS66 NGC. B-1, R.1. Numerous theories have been proposed concerning the enigmatic E and L counterstamped Bust quarters, which began to appear in numismatic circles in the second half of the 19th century. Current speculation is that the Economite religious community in Pennsylvania counterstruck these pieces as a voting measure. The E and L counterstamps represented rival factions within the Economites. This is a remarkable example of the E counterstamp. Ocean-blue and orange toning graces lustrous and sharply struck surfaces. Void of any relevant marks, and encapsulated in a prior generation NGC holder. Census: 5 in 66, 1 finer (10/06). 1815 25C MS66 NGC. B-1, the only known dies, R.1. Die State II. The date is quite wide and equally spaced, and the large stars are close to the border. Star 1 points between the first and second drapery folds. The quarter is, quite possibly, the most popular and widely used coin denomination in the United States today, particularly with the recent advent of the Statehood series, scheduled to end in 2008. Noncollectors might find it shocking to read that such was not always the case. The early U.S. quarter series is rife with gaps, as the Mint produced no coins of the denomination from 1797 to 1803 and from 1808 to 1814, nor in 1816-1817, 1826, 1829, or 1830. The denomination apparently gained widespread popularity only among financial institutions and the general public until the 1830s.

The first quarter produced since 1807, the 1815 introduced John Reich's Capped Bust type to the denomination. This is a Condition Census Premium Gem whose surfaces are lustrous and vibrant beneath a rich overlay of mottled crimson-orange and electric-blue toning. The color is a little more extensive on the reverse, but both sides are equally free of grade-limiting abrasions. The strike is well centered, with sharp striking definition throughout. Prominent obverse die clashing is noted, most prominently in the area above the date and below the bust, from the scroll containing the motto on the reverse, less so from the eagle's wing in the area before Liberty's face. NGC and PCGS combined have seen only seven coins in MS66, with one coin finer, an MS67 example at NGC (4/07). (PCGS# 5321)

1815 25C MS65 NGC. B-1, R.1. Apparently the nation had all the quarter dollars it needed for a few years after the Mint struck 220,643 pieces in 1807. Then in 1815 production resumed with John Reich's new Capped Bust design. The Mint struck 89,235 quarters in this year before a fire broke out in one of the outbuildings, ruining the rolling mills and blank cutters, and idling production of gold and silver coins until late 1817. This is a splendid, heavily frosted Gem example that is brilliant throughout. Generally well struck, the only noticeable area of softness is on the highpoints of Liberty's hair. Lightly abraded, close examination with a glass reveals a few tiny specks of grease that were struck into the planchet at the time of manufacture. Exceptional quality and rarity. 1815 25C MS65 NGC. B-1, the only known dies, R.1. Die State II. Following a delivery of 220,643 pieces in 1807, the Philadelphia Mint idled its quarter dollar presses in favor of the half dollar denomination. Revived in 1815, John Reich's Capped Bust design had substituted Robert Scot's Draped Bust, Heraldic Eagle motif of 1804-1807. Only 89,235 quarters were produced in 1815, and this is only the fifth time in the last 13 years that we have offered a Gem specimen of this issue. The present specimen is richly toned in golden-purple patina with softer cobalt-blue and apricot undertones. The coin is perfectly centered with uncommonly crisp striking detail, and the surfaces are distraction-free with a thick, frosty texture. A mere 89,235 pieces were produced from a single obverse and reverse die marriage. While circulated and lower Mint State survivors are available with more or less frequency, Gems are undeniably rare with just nine MS65 examples known to NGC and PCGS (7/06). The present example is an early die state with no clashmarks and reverse repunching on the base of the second T in STATES. The A in STATES is also repunched. This is an uncommonly well struck representative of the design with fully denticulated borders and crisp definition over virtually all features. Both sides present as untoned with a lustrous, frosty-white sheen. 1815 25C MS66 NGC. B-1, the only known dies, R.1. Die State II. The Quarter is, quite possibly, the most popular and widely used coin denomination in the United States today. Non-collectors might find it shocking to read that this was not always the case. The early U.S. Quarter series is riddled with gaps as the Mint did not produce coins of this denomination from 1797-1803 and 1808-1814, and in 1816, 1817, 1826, 1829, and 1830. Apparently, this denomination did not gain widespread popularity among financial institutions and the general public until the 1830s.

The first Quarter produced since 1807, the 1815 introduced John Reich's Capped Bust type to the denomination. This is a Condition Census Gem whose surfaces are lustrous and vibrant beneath a rich overlay of mottled crimson-orange and electric-blue toning. 1815 25C MS65 NGC. B-1, the only known dies, R.1. Die State II. We are pleased to be offering two Gem quality representatives of this, the premier issue in the Capped Bust Quarter series of 1815-1838. The present example is a little more sharply struck than the MS66 NGC example in the following lot, but we still note some slight bluntness of detail on the reverse over the eagle's right (facing) talon. Rich steel-gray toning envelops both sides and lightens a little toward the centers, where suggestions of pale golden-tan color are also noted. Clashmarks (as struck) in the lower obverse field and around the reverse eagle confirm the die state, and there are no mentionable handling marks. The Philadelphia Mint used only one pair of dies to produce 89,235 Quarters this year, and the relatively limited number of Uncirculated survivors are always in demand for first-year type purposes. 1815 25C MS64 PCGS. B-1, the only known dies, R.1. Die State III. This die state shows that the dies were lapped, which almost completely effaced the prominent die clashing from Die State II. It also reduced the prominence of the repunching on the second T in STATES, and it also accounts for the smaller 5 in the date. The famous E and L counterstamped quarters are often found from this die state. As indicated in the write-up for the MS66 below, quarters were not an especially popular early mint product. The 89,235 pieces struck in 1815 were apparently sufficient to meet the demand for this denomination until 1818, when more quarters were produced again. This lovely piece is mostly brilliant. It shows smooth, creamy mint luster with no obvious or detracting abrasions on either side. (PCGS# 5321)

This is a well struck near-Gem, with the stars sharply defined and only trivial weakness of strike on the hair forelock of Liberty. The devices have attractive gold patina. Lustrous and nearly free from abrasions, with surfaces that suggest full Gem designation. Ghostly, reversed outlines of devices from the other side are present as the result of being struck from clashed dies. Population: 14 in 64, 4 finer (10/05).

1815 25C MS64 PCGS. B-1, R.1. This is the first year of issue for John Reich's Capped Bust design quarter dollar coinage. Only one die pair is known, and it lasted for the entire production of 89,235 coins, including examples delivered January 10, 1816. It was the same day that a fire broke out in one of the Mint's buildings, ruining the rolling mill and other equipment, making it impossible to coin any further silver of gold pieces. Large cents were the only coins struck in 1816, due to the existence of a supply of ready-made planchets for these coins. During 1815, only quarter dollars, half dollars, and half eagles were coined, and only the quarters are readily available. This example is sharply struck and exceptionally attractive with hints of gold color over lustrous ivory surfaces. Both sides have brilliant mint bloom. A few scattered surface marks on each side limit the grade and keep this example out of the Gem grade level. Population: 15 in 64, 4 finer (7/06).
