1811 50C Small 8 MS66 NGC. O-109, R.2. An uncommonly fine example of this generally available variety, instantly recognizable upon examining the reverse, which is biplanar due to the heavy die crack from the eagle's left (facing) wing that runs through the scroll to the left of the P in PLURIBUS and the first S in STATES. Another radial die crack runs through the left-side olive leaves, the bottoms of UNIT, and the middle of ED, meeting the first crack at S1. yet another traverses S OF AMERICA and the arrowheads. There is a sharp defect in Liberty's upper lip. A tiny center obverse dot shows on Liberty's neck.

This charming Premium Gem boasts arm's-length enormous eye appeal, with hues of heather and lilac accenting the light dove-gray patina. Gorgeous luster radiates from beneath the pleasing ensemble, and the strike is well executed, although the dies are lightly eroded on each side. According to a recent edition of Auction & Mail Bid Prices Realized for Bust Half Dollars, this piece is likely close to the top of the certified Condition Census for the variety, although we cannot ascertain whether it is the absolute finest. An appealing and elegant coin. (PCGS# 6097)

1811 50C Small 8 MS66 NGC. O-108a, R.2. This appears to be a particularly late die state, as significant die clashing is visible on the reverse near the eagle's head, neck, and right (facing) wing. The coin is exceptionally lustrous beneath vivid original toning ranging from a golden tan in the centers to bands of bronze, burgundy, gold, lime green, and cobalt blue as one approaches the sides. The strike is decent, with a bit of weakness visible on the first three stars and left olive leaves. The few surface markings do not impede the overall visual effect. The Parsley reference lists the condition census for O-108 as (67,65,65,63,63) with no separate citation for O-108a. As an MS66 this coin would fit comfortably within this grouping. NGC (11/06) reports a census of 12 1811 halves in 66, 3 finer, encompassing all varieties, with none of these attributed to date as either O-108 or O-108a. (PCGS# 6097)

This is a common die variety with early and late die states seen in approximately equal quantities, although the late die state is seen slightly more often in the highest grades. This example is sharply detailed with full luster and pleasing champagne toning, accented by splashes of blue-green color.

1811 MS 65 NGC. Small 8. O-108a, R.2. Extremely lustrous with stars that are drawn to the edges by the later die state, but maintain reasonable sharpness. The obverse is draped in golden-violet toning with highlights of turquoise and rose iridescence. A slightly deeper steel-violet coloration is teamed with blue and yellow-gold accents on the reverse. A colorful gem that easily merits Condition Census for the variety. Population: 9 in 65, 8 finer (3/99). (PCGS# 6097)

1811 50C Small 8 MS65 NGC. O-106, R.3. Most easily attributed by the die defect line that extends from crossbar 2 into the right wing. Thick, satiny luster overlays each side with rich gray toning on the obverse, the reverse is several shades lighter. Sharply struck in the centers with some weakness noted on the peripheral stars, most notably those on the right side. Population: 14 in 65, 14 finer (11/02). (PCGS# 6097)
