1827 50C Curl Base 2 MS64 PCGS. O-147, R.4. In 1827, the Mint went to town with half dollar production, creating a total of 49 different die varieties. Specialists in the series look upon these coins in one of two ways, either as a favorite issue ripe for cherrypicking, or as a least favorite issue that slows down progress. The majority of the known varieties feature a square base 2 in the date. Just three 1827/6 overdate varieties exist, as well as two die combinations with the curl base 2 obverse. This example is the rarer of these two curl base 2 varieties, and is seldom seen in Mint State grades. Only about half a dozen such coins are known today. This is likely not the finest known example, yet it is almost definitely in the Condition Census for this variety. The surfaces have frosty pewter-gray luster with peripheral gold and blue iridescence. Population: 2 in 64, 1 finer (12/06).

1827 50C Curl Base 2 MS64 PCGS. O-147, R.4. In 1827, the Mint went to town with half dollar production, creating a total of 49 different die varieties. 1827 50C Curl Base 2 MS63 NGC. O-146, R.2. This Overton variety marries the Curl Base 2 date style with a reverse on which the lowest arrowhead is attached to the last A in AMERICA. A die line that passes through the topmost five horizontal stripes in the shield appears to be an extension of line 3 of stripe 6. This pretty Select example offers gray-gold surfaces tinged with amber. The strike is well executed, and each side shows moderate die erosion that draws the peripheries toward the border. 1827 50C Curl Base 2 AU58 NGC. O-146, R.2. The O-146 and O-147 are the only 1827 varieties with the curl base 2 in the date. This O-146 is distinguished by a die line that connects the reverse arrows, traveling southwest from the top arrow shaft. Die lapping has partially removed this diagnostic, but it is present in the protected area between the second and third arrowheads. Another diagnostic is present, a die line extending downward through the topmost five azures that appears to be an extension of pale three of gule six. This pleasing, lightly circulated specimen offers pleasing dove-gray surfaces with hints of copper and bronze in the peripheries. The strike is generous, with slight weakness on the eagle's left (facing) wing. Few mentionable distractions are present. Envelope Included. (PCGS# 6145)
