1835 MS 67 PCGS. O-109, R.2. Most likely the finest known 1835 half in existence, and certainly one of the most beautiful as well as numismatically significant. The description from the Eliasberg catalog was in-depth and exact, and we can do no better than to reproduce portions of it here to more adequately convey the appearance of this remarkable coin: "Amazing prooflike fields with a trace of frost in the left obverse and around the eagle's head extending partially into the spaces between the vertical shield stripes. Quite possibly a presentation striking. The balance of the coin is fully and deeply reflective. Superb toning radiates from the surface. The obverse is deep gold, changing to reddish lilac and bright blue-green at the borders. The reverse is similar although the blue and green is much more vivid. A few stars are flat and the borders are weak although complete. All other details are bold." Identifiable by a shallow vertical scratch on the cheek of Liberty, that is faintly visible when angled at one angle and invisible when tilted another. There is also a tiny planchet flake to the left of the base of the 1 in the date. This is the only MS 67 certified by either service, while a single MS 66 (an NGC coin) is known. The next closest PCGS certified pieces are several at the MS 64 level (12/98). From the Benson Collection of Finest Known Type. (PCGS# 6168)

1835 50C MS66 NGC. O-108, R.3. The bright, lustrous surfaces show a bit of light silvery-gray patina on each side, but elsewhere the surfaces are deeply toned with an arc of iridescence around the right portion of each side. A bit softly struck but there are no abrasions apparent over either the obverse or the reverse. Undoubtedly the finest known example of this slightly scarcer variety, the Condition Census in Overton is: (63, 60, 60, 60, 60). (PCGS# 6168)

1835 50C MS66 NGC. O-108, R.3. The lustrous, original surfaces are layered in speckled silvery-gray patina, with deeper arcs of russet and sea-green iridescence about the peripheries. A bit softly struck on the central devices, but there are no abrasions apparent over either the obverse or the reverse. Most likely the finest known example of the die pairing (the Condition Census table tops out at MS60) and high on the list for any 1835 Half Dollar. Population: 4 in 66, 0 finer (4/03). (PCGS# 6168)

1835 50C MS65 NGC. O-106, R.1. Deep gray and pastel-golden colors grace this lustrous and typically struck Gem. Only a couple of stars have not received an exacting blow for the dies. Liberty's nose, cheek, forehead, and bust drapery have some of the flatness sometimes encountered on Mint State examples of the type. A few unimportant grazes on Liberty's cheek, but the surfaces are quite clean overall, and specialists will be hard pressed to locate a finer example of the date.
