1896 50C MS66 PCGS. Even though almost a million pieces were struck of the 1896-P it remains an overlooked and underrated date in the Barber half series. Business strikes are scarce in all grades and are generally more valuable than proofs. When found, though, the 1896 is sharply defined with excellent mint luster. This coin certainly fits that description with intricately detailed design elements that rival those of a proof. The mint luster is bright and heavily frosted with semi-reflective fields. Close examination with a magnifier reveals no obvious or even mentionable abrasions on either side. An outstanding 1896 and clearly among the finest known of this elusive Philadelphia issue. Population: 4 in 66, 1 finer (11/04). (PCGS# 6474)

Each side showcases fabulous shades of blue patina around the borders that lightens to rose and gold toward the centers. A single mark appear along the shield. 1896 50C MS65 PCGS. A scarce coin in all Mint State grades, the certified population of this issue dwindles rapidly above the MS64 level of preservation. This lot offers a satin finished Gem whose otherwise silver-gray surfaces yield to orange-gold patina in most areas around the rims. The strike is as close to full as one should expect for a Barber Half of any date.

1896 50C MS65 NGC. The 1896 is a popular type coin with collectors as it is relatively available in lower grades and still has the charm of a 19th century date. However, it is surprisingly scarce in Gem condition as seen by the numbers of coins certified by the major services. NGC has only graded eight coins in MS65 with two finer, while PCGS has certified ten Gems with four finer (6/06). This is a lovely MS65 example. Both sides are nearly brilliant with just a hint of pastel-golden color. The striking details show pinpoint definition on each side and one small angling mark is mentioned on the lower part of Liberty's neck. (PCGS# 6474)

1896 50C MS65 NGC. Fully struck in all areas, the fields are prooflike on each side. The reflectivity is especially pronounced as the toning is so deep over each side. Layer upon layer of gray, blue, and rose patina are slathered over each side, and still the prooflike sheen from the fields shines through. A lovely and obviously original Gem Barber Half.
