PCGS 1846-O MS 63. A relatively common date in lower grades, but very difficult to locate above XF and especially scarce in mint state. This is one of the finest pieces available with only one other certified by PCGS in this grade and none finer (NGC has graded one MS 64). An atypical example, this piece show full details on the head of Liberty and claws on the eagle. While usually seen extensively bagmarked, this piece shows no mentionable or distracting abrasions. Deeply toned in shades of gray-golden, russet-brown, and rose. (PCGS# 6933)

1846-O $1 MS63 PCGS. Only four Seated dollar issues were produced at the New Orleans Mint, the 1846-O being the first in this group. This date is also significant because it is the premier branch mint Silver dollar in U.S. coinage history. We do not know exactly how many dies the engraving department in Philadelphia prepared for the '46-O production run, but at least three distinct reverses were used to strike a total of 59,000 coins. This entire mintage was achieved in the month of June, after which the majority of coins entered circulation. Very few 1846-O dollars were deliberately set aside at the time of production, and most Uncirculated examples that have survived probably did so purely by chance. While worn survivors are scarce, if somewhat overrated on today's market, accurately graded Mint State representatives are few and far between.

The present PCGS-certified 1846-O dollar easily qualifies for Condition Census standing. The reverse die seems to be the one that Bowers (1993) characterizes as having a "very weak and thin O mintmark." This date is not known for an especially sharp strike, and this coin is a little softly detailed around the obverse periphery from 12 o'clock to 5 o'clock. All remaining features on that side are bold, and the reverse displays an overall sharper impression. Both sides are toned in mottled steel-gray hues. There are a few scattered abrasions, but only a shallow scratch mark in the reverse field above the NE of ONE is useful for pedigree purposes. NGC and PCGS combined report only five coins in MS63, there are two MS64s, one at each service (5/06). (PCGS# 6933)

1846-O $1 MS62 PCGS. The New Orleans Mint produced four Seated Dollar issues. Among these, the final two, the 1859-O and 1860-O, are common (by Seated Dollar standards) in Mint State, while the 1846-O and 1850-O are very scarce to rare. Indeed, as of (9/05), PCGS has certified just 19 pieces in Mint State, only 5 of which grade higher than the present piece. Toned in tan-gray and sky-blue colors, this satiny is crisply struck, and the eye appeal is abetted by its relatively unmarked surfaces. A pair of small marks above the E in ONE are mentioned primarily to identify the piece in any future auction appearances.

1846-O $1 MS62 PCGS. Only 59,000 pieces were struck of the 1846-O dollar, and while it is relatively available in circulated condition, Mint State pieces are very challenging. This is an especially attractive example that has bright, semi-prooflike fields on each side. The centers are golden-gray and surrounded by bright cerulean-blue toning at the margins. Well struck overall with only a couple of stars near Liberty's head showing any weakness. A very flashy and attractive example of this important branch mint issue. 1846-O $1 MS62 PCGS. The New Orleans Mint opened its doors as a coinage facility in 1838. The impressive building, which is still standing near the city's French Quarter, was designed by William Strickland. The cornerstone was laid in September 1835, and the first coins, Seated Half Dimes and Dimes, rolled off the presses in 1838. The Mint's initial delivery of business strike Reeded Edge Half Dollar followed in 1839, and the first Seated Quarters emerged from the presses in 1840. Production of Silver Dollars in the Crescent City, however, would have to wait until 1846, when the New Orleans Mint delivered 59,000 coins. Some numismatists believe that the P-mint Silver Dollars of the 1840s may have been widely exported. Regardless of whether or not this is true, it seems likely that the '46-O delivery was intended for domestic circulation throughout the South. New Orleans was the principal port on the Mississippi River at the time, and many examples were also distributed to other parts of the country via that waterway and its tributaries.

The relative availability of 1846-O Seated Dollars in grades below XF suggest, first, that most coins remained within the United States, and, second, that this issue saw widespread circulation. Locating an attractive, problem-free XF or AU representative is challenging, and desirable Mint State specimens are virtually unknown. This is the most attractive '46-O Dollar that this cataloger has seen. Both sides are richly toned in lavender-charcoal shades that leave little doubt about this coin's originality. Olive shadings are splashed around the devices, and a few small, isolated areas of near-brilliance are evident on the obverse. Characteristic striking softness is seen over Liberty's head, but the definition in that area is superior to that often seen on survivors of this issue, and the balance of the features are free of bothersome incompleteness of detail. There are no mentionable abrasions, and the surfaces reveal pretty orange-gold underton (PCGS# 6933)

1846-O $1 MS60 PCGS. This was the first date of silver dollar production at New Orleans, and one of only four dates in the Seated dollar series from this mint. Only 59,000 pieces were struck of the 1846-O dollar, and while it is relatively available in circulated condition, Mint State examples are very challenging. PCGS has certified just 19 Uncirculated coins (6/05). The specimen in this lot shows some of the usual strike weakness in the stars along the right border, but the remainder of the design elements are sharp, including the eagle's head and claws, which usually exhibit weakness on t his issue. The silvery surfaces display splashes of light gold color, and the fields have prooflike tendencies. A few minute contact marks are scattered about, but none can be considered serious.
