1860 $1 MS67 NGC. For the second year in a row, the Philadelphia Mint produced a sizeable number (217,600 pieces) of Silver Dollars in 1860. However, this issue is seldom encountered in either circulated or Mint State grades, an indication that countless examples were melted in the uncertain years that followed.

We took one look at this exquisite 1860 Seated Liberty Dollar and immediately thought of the remarkable quality collection of Seated Liberty Dollars in the 1977 Fairfield Sale. While we cannot say conclusively that lot 1093 from Fairfield, listed as Gem Brilliant Uncirculated, is indeed the coin offered here, there is a distinct possibility that they are one-and-the-same. Its untoned surfaces display an intense, satiny sheen that are only minutely affected by signs of coin-to-coin contact. The strike is well executed in nearly all areas, the only exception being the feathers and talons of the eagle's left (facing) leg. As an MS67, not only is this supremely preserved 1860 the single finest certified example of the issue, but it is also one of a mere three No Motto Seated Dollars certified by both NGC and PCGS combined (4/03). 1860 $1 MS65 NGC. We are thrilled to offer a Gem Mint State example of this scarce date, one of the finest in existence, although PCGS and NGC have combined to grade three finer quality coins. Both sides are fully lustrous with frosty silver surfaces and splendid toning. Pale gold is emphasized with accents of rose and light blue color. Design details are mostly sharp although the head is weakly defined as are several stars and certain details on the reverse. Census: 4 in 65, 1 finer (4/06). (PCGS# 6949)

1860 $1 MS64 PCGS. An extraordinary 1860 Seated dollar. The surfaces exude a warm, satiny glow and are completely brilliant overall. Sharply struck, the coin is nearly abrasion-free with the only mentionable distractions being a couple of milling marks below the D of UNITED on the reverse. The fields have light die striations, and as a result give the coin even more brilliance and visual appeal. Population: 34 in 64, 5 finer (4/06). (PCGS# 6949)

PCGS 1860 MS 64. Even though 217,600 business strikes were produced, the 1860 is not available in significantly higher numbers than the next several, lower mintage dates; indicating that the 1860 was also a victim of wartime hoarding and melting during the Civil War. Only 9 other coins have been graded the same as this piece by PCGS (1/95) and only 3 others have attained a higher grade. This is a very attractive Seated dollar. Completely brilliant, the untoned surfaces reveal all the coin's bright mint luster and every nuance of the design. Sharply struck in all areas, the fields show heavy die striations which have imparted a semi-prooflike finish to the coin. Mixed in with this reflectiveness are generous portions of thick mint frost--the combination of which make for a very flashy coin. A milling mark in the upper left obverse field and a few stray abrasions here and there are all that prevent a gem grade, otherwise the coin certainly has the eye appeal of a gem. (PCGS# 6949)

1860 MS 64. A lovely, prooflike example of this very rare issue. Unlike its counterpart from the New Orleans mint, this date has not been found in hoards and remains very rare in all grades. In mint state, especially at the high end, this date becomes extremely difficult to locate. The example we offer here is untoned, except for a white haze that runs diagonally across the reverse from the top to the lower right. The strike is excellent, with no weakness whatsoever on the eagle's feathers or wings, or on Liberty's head or the obverse stars. Some light die striations are noted in the fields, but these should not be confused with hairlines. A great coin for the advanced collector of this series. (PCGS# 6949)
