1860-O MS 66 NGC. Tied with the previous coin for finest known honors, this piece differs considerably from that piece as well as the other coins in the hoard. While similarly toned, the colors are lighter, more variegated, and there is a thinner veneer of color than on the other pieces. The result is a coin whose mint luster is irrepressible--in fact, the original mint brilliance shines through the patina and is so intense it renders a semi-prooflike glimmer to the fields. Elsewhere the striking details are fully brought up with finely detailed star radials, sharp folds in Liberty's gown, and well defined feathers on the eagle. An extraordinary coin and a fitting end to an extraordinary run of original pre-Civil War Seated dollars. (PCGS# 6950)

1860-O MS 66 NGC. One of the two new finest known 1860-O dollars, coins that were previously unknown and whose presence was unsuspected until consigned to this auction. Before this hoard was uncovered no MS 66 examples had been certified of this issue. In fact, only 16 coins of both the No Motto and With Motto type had previously been certified by both of the major services in MS 66.
The surfaces of this superb piece are intensely lustrous, and like other dollars from this hoard, display lilac-gray patina with undertones of blue, rose, and yellow-golden. We find no singularly distracting blemishes, and close examination only shows a thin scratch on the face of Liberty that is well concealed by the multiple layerings of color. Just a trifle softly struck on the highpoints of the design, this being most obvious on the upper left (facing) wing of the eagle. An exciting opportunity to acquire this very difficult type in the ultimate grade--an opportunity only eclipsed by the next lot, the second MS 66 from the "Chimney Hoard" and final coin from this remarkable group of Seated dollars. 1860-O $1 MS65 NGC. As anyone who is remotely aware of 19th century type coins knows, the 1860-O Dollar is one of the two most common dates available in Mint State in the entire series. Several bags of this date surfaced in 1962, and since that time, it has remained as one of the most available (and usually most attractive) Seated Dollars in lower Uncirculated grades. But it must be understood that it is only in these lesser grades that the '60-O is a common issue. As a Gem, it ranks among several other dates in condition rarity, and, in fact, is rarer than at least three dates in this lofty grade: the 1854, 1861, and 1864. This is a stunningly beautiful coin. It resembles all other mint state '60-O Dollars with its bright, partially reflective surfaces, but here the similarities end. What it lacks are the numerous, and oftentimes distractingly large, bagmarks seen on most Dollars of this issue created by residing for a century in a mint sewn bag. There are a few small, inconsequential marks on each side, but the only flaw that deserves individual mention is a small milling mark in the reverse field above the eagle's neck. While primarily a brilliant coin, the borders are touched with just the slightest hint of crimson-red color, but this really does little to alter the perception of this dazzling coin as brilliant. 1860-O MS 65 NGC. The story of this remarkable hoard proves the old adage: "Treasure is where you find it." If the group of children who found these coins in the chimney of the old house in New Orleans hadn't been snooping around where they probably shouldn't have been, these coins would most likely have been hauled away to the dump with the rest of the scrap lumber and bricks. But they were saved from permanent loss, and here is another of the five MS 65s in the hoard. Close examination reveals several small abrasions scattered on the figure of Liberty, but these are indeed small and are well concealed by the gray-lilac and rose toning that covers each side of this lustrous gem. 1860-O $1 MS65 NGC. While 1860-O dollars were probably intended primarily for the export trade, several tens of thousands were held domestically. This, along with the release of several thousand pieces by the Treasury during the 1962-1964 distribution, has resulted, in what David Bowers (1993) calls : "...the most plentiful Liberty Seated dollar in Mint State...." Most Uncirculated specimens are in the MS60 to MS63 levels, in which several hundred pieces have been certified. However, only about 60 near-Gems and better examples have been graded.

The present MS65 '60-O displays smoky-gray patina with subtle sky-blue and gold undertones. Nicely preserved surfaces exude soft luster and sharply impressed design features, though the centers of the stars along the right border are soft. A rather pleasing specimen that is devoid of the serious bagmarks that are often seen on large, heavy dollars such as this. Census: 9 in 65, 4 finer (3/06). (PCGS# 6950)

1860-O MS 65 NGC. The brightest and possibly the finest of the five gem examples offered in this important group of high grade 1860-O dollars. The gray-lilac and golden toning seen on this piece is similar to the other coins in this hoard, but here the haziness is lacking, thus allowing the underlying mint brilliance to shine through and highlight the natural patina of the coin. The striking details are not quite fully brought up, but very close, and there are no obvious or mentionable abrasions on either side. Look for this piece to realize a significant premium over the other four gems, this coin being the very definition of "premium quality." (PCGS# 6950)

When held beneath a light, the mint luster shimmers and races around the coin unimpeded by any significant abrasions, the surfaces are only subdued by the thick patination when viewed away from a light source. Each side has an overlay of hazy gray patina with colorful undertones of lilac and golden. Sharply (but not fully) struck, the only marks we can find on this piece are several tiny abrasions in the upper reverse field above the eagle's head. Exceptionally clean and problem-free, one of the finest examples known for the issue. (PCGS# 6950)
