1846 $1 PR64 NGC. Breen-5436. Recut Date. The date is clearly and dramatically recut on this Proof Dollar, with remnants of the first entry about 50% below the final position. Witness the digit 4, with the base of the final 4 standing on the crossbar of the previous 4. The other date elements are less visible, but similarly low. A tiny projection, from the serif of the 1, points out from the left upright of the primary digit 1, just below center. The reverse is from the same die as all other Proof Seated Dollars from the 1840s, and may be the only such die utilized, even though past researchers have reported more than one die. Walter Breen recorded the existence of 1846 Proof Seated Dollars with both a Recut Date and a Normal Date. Unlike 1845, where two varieties do exist, we believe that all 1846 Proof Dollars are from a single die pair with the Recut Date as seen here. In his Proof Encyclopedia, Breen suggested that five different Proofs exist from a Normal Date obverse, however, at least two of those five are also listed in his roster for the Recut Date Proofs!

This gorgeous Near-Gem quality example traces its pedigree to the Pittman Collection, and before that back to F.C.C. Boyd. In the mid-1940s, much of the Boyd Collection was offered by Abe Kosoff and Abner Kreisberg, who billed this offering as the "World's Greatest Collection." A choice Proof, this lovely coin has deep gold, gunmetal blue, and steel color over deeply mirrored surfaces and extremely sharp design features. A few minor hairlines are noted under the toning, but none of these are of any concern. Determination of the specific Proof population for this date requires further pedigree research, although it is reasonably safe to suggest that this date is more plentiful than most others in the 1840s. Still, probably less than two dozen exist.

1846 $1 PR64 PCGS. Like most proof Silver Dollars from the 1840s, the 1846 is an enigmatic issue. Writing in 1993, Bowers states that perhaps 30-40 examples are extant, a rather generous total for the era. Indeed, this estimate seems optimistic, as NGC and PCGS combined have certified only 20 coins as of January 2002. Most of the coins known were struck from an obverse die with a noticeably blundered date. The date was first impressed into the die too low, then corrected. Traces of all four underdigits are evident under a loupe, particularly the final two digits. Among those coins known with this obverse are:

1. Ex: Lorin G. Parmelee Sale (New York Coin & Stamp Co., 6/1890).

2. Ex: World's Greatest Collection--F.C.C. Boyd (sold in installments by Kosoff, 1945-1946).

3. Ex: October 1999 E-Fair Premier Sale (Heritage, 10/99), lot 5320, where it realized $24,000.

4. Ex: Morris Silverman Collection, the present example.

The Mint used a second obverse die for this delivery (with a plain date), but there is only one reverse die known, that which is common to all original proofs of the 1840-1850 era.

This richly toned example displays a virtually complete endowment of dove-gray toning. Hints of near-brilliance are evident on the reverse as undertones, a splash of golden-tan color overlays the eagle's left (facing) leg. There is a thin, arcing, staccato-like contact mark in the right obverse field, and a smaller contact mark in the upper right reverse field parallels the back of the eagle's neck. These features are useful as pedigree markers, and they are also the only blemishes that seem to bar this otherwise smooth example from a full Gem grade.

1846 PR 64. Prior to 1858, proofs were not coined with any regularity or with any real plan for distribution, and this dollar was probably struck at the request of one of the few collectors of the time or as a presentation piece for some contemporary VIP. The 1846 proof dollar is a true rarity. Bowers estimates only 30-40 were coined, with 15 or so that can be traced today. The only other proof we have seen recently is a slightly circulated piece that we sold a couple of years ago.
The mirrored fields on this piece have an unfathomable depth of reflectivity. And this is saying quite a bit as each side displays rather heavy tonal qualities with speckled deep blue, violet, and crimson the predominant colors. A less well made coin might lack the bright flash of reflectivity from the fields that this piece possesses. Lightly hairlined, the only mark of note is a curved one in the right obverse field. Breen considered this variety to be very rare, which is something that could also be said for any proof variety of this date. Well struck and brilliant with reflective fields. An impressive proof Seated Dollar, and one of the most important lots in this auction. (PCGS# 6987)

The 1846 proof silver dollar is a true rarity. Bowers estimates only 30-40 were coined, with 15 or so that can be traced today. The mirrored fields on this piece are quite muted due to the depth of the gunmetal-blue and gray toning. Lightly hairlined, several small marks and abrasions from rough handling are noted in the fields on each side. A number of contact marks are noted in the fields, a particularly heavy one is above the eagle adjacent to the final S of STATES.
