1851 $1 Restrike PR64 PCGS. Beautiful sea-green and golden-brown colors adorn the margins of this desirable near-Gem Seated Dollar. The original toning pattern matches its color plate in the Carter auction catalog. Thorough evaluation reveals a few faint hairlines, but this intricately struck specimen has undeniably impressive eye appeal, and is certified in an old green label holder.

In his 1993 reference to Silver Dollars, Q. David Bowers states, "the existing of true [original] proofs is doubtful, and those attributed as such in the past are now believed to be prooflike business strikes." Thus, all proof 1851 Seated Dollars are restrikes, identified as such by the slightly lower placement of the date beneath the rock. Unlike the comparatively generous mintage of 1859 and later proof dates, Bowers estimates that only 50 to 100 proofs were struck dated 1851. High grade survivors are made even more desirable by the rarity of original 1851 business strikes, which are even tougher to find than their low mintage of 1,300 pieces would suggest. Assembling a set of proof Seated Dollars is a formidable numismatic challenge, yet a surprising number of collectors attempt to do so, no doubt because of the beauty of the Seated Liberty design in large proof format. 1851 Restrike PR 65. Silver dollar production slowed to a dribble in 1851, and as collector demand increased a few years later, then chief coiner George Eckfeldt figured he could satisfy demand by running off a few extra coins, late at night in the Mint, after everyone else went home. Collectors were then able to obtain, for a small premium, certain rare dates of various denominations. Hence this restrike 1851 silver dollar.
The fields are deeply reflective, but the pink, russet, and blue toning is also deep in hue; however, this does little to obscure the brightness inherent in this proof striking. The only flaw noted is a minor rim bump on the reverse between 6 and 7 o'clock. An absolutely splendid gem proof example of this important date in the Seated dollar series.

1851 $1 Restrike PR62 PCGS. The mintage of Seated Liberty dollars bearing the 1851 date was extremely limited with a recorded total of just 1,300 Centered Date pieces, known today by the term Original. Several years later a new High Date obverse die was introduced to produce additional 1851 dollars in proof, the Restrikes. This piece is a splendid representative with deeply mirrored fields and lustrous devices, an unquestioned proof strike. Both sides have brilliant silver surfaces with no evidence of toning. It remains in an older green-label holder, prior to the introduction of Cameo and Deep Cameo designations by PCGS. We believe that this example easily qualifies for a Cameo designation, and should be considered just that when competitive bids are prepared. Population: 13 in 62, 8 finer (11/06). (PCGS# 6993)

In short, there were 1,300 business strikes produced. That is certain, but after that matters become more cloudy. Allegedly original proofs were struck, but Bowers claims these are really misattributed restrikes or first-strike business strikes. It appears that some 50-100 restrikes were produced in 1858 or later to satisfy collector demand for this date. Much has been made about the centering of the date or its closeness to the rock above the exergual area, but until someone proves definitively that a true, non-die clashed proof with a high date exists, we will assume that the few proofs that are known are all restrikes.

This is a deeply mirrored example that has light, even, golden-brown toning over each side. A few small contact marks are located in the fields, the most notable seen to the right of Liberty's shin, another to the left of the eagle's beak, and a third below the left leg of the second A in AMERICA. A lovely example of this very rare and highly sought-after Seated dollar. Population 5 in PR62, 10 finer (4/05). (PCGS# 6993)

1851 $1 Restrike PR63 NGC. Much ink has been spilled over the proof 1851 Seated Dollar, but there does not seem to be any conclusive evidence concerning the status of originals and restrikes. Bowers (1993) states that there are no original proofs. As of January 2002, however, NGC and PCGFS have certified three coins as such. Could these be misattributed originals, or early impression, prooflike business strikes? Without actually seeing the coins, there is no way for us to tell. What we do know is that all restrike 1851 Seated Dollars display a centered date, as opposed to the high date on originals. Two die marriages are known, with the obverse of the present coin displaying the following diagnostics:

1. Die rust on the 51 in the date.

2. Tiny raised lump in Liberty's drapery folds above the middle point of the shield.

The reverse die is identifiable by:

1. Lines in stripe 1 taper toward the junction with the lowest crossbar.

2. Flat areas within shield only partially polished.

Interestingly, some of the diagnostics that Bowers attributes to the second obverse die are evident on this coin, namely slight doubling on a few of the stars. Stars 1, 2, 12, and 13 also display a curious feature: shadowing toward the denticles. We are at a loss to explain all of these features, but we believe that they represent some kind of strike doubling from the multiple impressions that this coin probably received in the press.

Numismatists believe that the restrike 1851 Dollars were produced circa 1858 expressly to supply collectors with an example of this rare date. Perhaps 30-40 coins are extant, if current NGC and PCGS data is accurate (1/02). The present Select representative is uniformly brilliant on the obverse with an appreciably cameoed sheen on the reverse. The strike is full, and the surfaces do not reveal any hairlines that are out of context with the designated grade. Somewhat subdued tan-gray, cobalt-blue, and lilac toning hug (PCGS# 6993)

1851 $1 Restrike PR63 ANACS. Much like the 1873-CC, the 1851 is a rare date in the Seated Dollar series, but one would never know this after studying the Silverman Collection. This is the second restrike 1851 Dollar in this fabulous collection, and it was struck from the same obverse and reverse dies as the preceding coin. Interestingly, the above mentioned strike doubling (if indeed that is what caused these features) exhibits a different pattern on this coin. All of the obverse stars are doubled, if not tripled, and the same holds true for the denticles on that side, particularly from 10-2 o'clock. Liberty's profile and the Liberty cap are also tripled, doubling is evident on virtually all of the reverse denticles. There are no readily evident hairlines or contact marks on either side, but the surfaces are somewhat subdued beneath curious olive-gold toning. Clearly a coin that deserves further study, and a second opportunity for the specialist to acquire an example of this rare date. (PCGS# 6993)
