1875-S/CC T$1 MS65 NGC. FS-012.6. Type I Obverse / Type I Reverse. For more than 30 years the existence of a second variety of the S/CC has been rumored and speculated, but no one has actually seen an example (to our knowledge) since 1974, and it has never been photographed prior to our sale of this coin in the Central States Auction of April 2002. Both Walter Breen and Dave Bowers listed a second variety in their respective encyclopedias, but only one coin has been ever been reported and the whereabouts of that piece were lost in the mid-1970s. The best and most thorough account is on page 988 of Bowers' Silver Dollar Encyclopedia, under "Bruce Amspacher's Discovery." The passage reads:

"Bruce Amspacher related the following concerning the rarer of two die varieties of the 1875-S/CC: "In early 1974, Ed Hipps sold an 1875-S/CC trade dollar to Jim Halperin for $375. The coin was frosty, mint state, and clean-as-a-gem to my 1974 eyes. I wanted the coin, but Jim quoted me $625 for it. Too much. The neatest thing about the coin was that the 'CC' mintmark was completely clear of the 'S' and far to the right. In 1975 I asked Jim if he still had the coin. He said he had sold it to Eric Newman (or maybe he said he sold it to John Willem--it was definitely one of those two).

"When I wrote the trade dollar section for John Highfill's book, The Comprehensive U.S. Silver Dollar Encyclopedia, I mentioned this variety. Walter Breen saw the article before publication and asked John to contact me. It was a new undiscovered variety Walter insisted, and he wanted to see a photograph. John said that Walter was very excited about the coin. I called Jim about the coin, but he didn't remember anything about it. Jim chided me about my ability to remember "everything that has ever happened." Of course, I don't remember everything, or even close to it. But I do remember that coin, and the variety definitely exists."

1875-S/CC T$1 MS64 PCGS. FS-501, formerly FS-012.5. Type One Reverse. This is a famous overmintmark variety, created when dies prepared for Carson City were sent on to San Francisco. Most of the issue entered circulation or were exported, and now Mint State examples are highly elusive. This variety was first discovered in the mid-1960s, and has been listed in the Guide Book for many years. This piece is sharply struck with exceptional design details, including full head details on the obverse and full claw details on the reverse. The surfaces are mostly brilliant with subtle champagne toning and satiny luster. Population: 4 in 64, 1 finer (12/06). (PCGS# 7040)

1875-S/CC T$1 MS64 PCGS. Type I Obverse / Type I Reverse. This overmintmark variety was unknown to the collecting public until the early 1960s. An example appeared in New Netherlands Coin Company's December 10-11, 1963 sale. Described as Brilliant Uncirculated, that coin realized $250. At the time that coin sold, the 1875-S/CC was believed to be extremely rare. While more coins have been identified since then, this issue is still scarce in circulated grades and rare in Mint State. In fact, Uncirculated representatives are believed to be rarer than those of the key date 1878-CC.

This is an attractive near-Gem whose richly frosted surfaces are toned in warm golden-tan iridescence that yields to brilliance in the center of the obverse. The sharp strike and minimally abraded features are free of criticism. An important offering, and a highlight of the present collection. (PCGS# 7040)

1875-S/CC T$1 MS64 NGC. FS-012.5. Sharply defined in virtually all areas, the surfaces are bright with a richly frosted texture. The luster thins somewhat to modest brightness in the fields. Untoned on the obverse, the reverse reveals a few sprays of golden-tan iridescence here and there. The "shadow" of the second C of the undermintmark is plainly visible to the right of the S mintmark, traces of the first C are also evident under a loupe. A popular and conditionally scarce overmintmark variety with only six coins certified in MS64 by NGC and PCGS and a mere three finer (5/01).

1875-S/CC T$1 MS63 PCGS. FS-012.6. Type One Obverse / Type One Reverse. This is the less obvious but much scarcer S/CC overmintmark variant. Both overmintmarks have a die lump to the left of the S, and the better known variety shows strong evidence both C's. This variety shows very little of the host die's mintmark, but the coin matches all the diagnostics we noted on the Morris Silverman Second Variety S/CC (April, 2002): "...a distinctive die crack that begins far left of the word TRADE and terminates at the left side of the A. Another die crack, this time very fine, is seen in the field just to the right and up from the word FINE. Other die cracks are seen on the obverse, most notably from the lower left rim through the waves and continuing upward through star 1 and almost to star 2. Another crack begins far below star 2 and terminates in the field close to star 3. A fine crack runs from rim to rim touching the tips of the olive leaves in Liberty's outstretched hand." This coin also shows light roller marks like the Silverman/Jack Lee coin, but they are across the central figure of Liberty rather than on the head. A bit softly struck, as one would expect from this late die state, the surfaces are softly frosted and each side shows medium density golden-rose toning that deepens just a bit around the margins.

1875-S/CC T$1 MS63 PCGS. FS-501, formerly FS-012.5. Type One Reverse. All known examples of the S/CC overmintmark variety are from the Type One reverse hub. The underlying CC mintmark is still quite prominent on this example, while on certain later die states it becomes nearly impossible to see. There are actually two different reverse dies known with a similar S/CC blunder, and this example is the more desirable variety with the Large S mintmark left of center over remnants of the former CC mintmark. This piece is a splendid Mint State example with satiny, slightly reflective fields and full brilliance on both sides. Population: 7 in 63, 5 finer (1/07). (PCGS# 7040)

1875-S/CC T$1 MS63 NGC. FS-012.5. Type One Reverse. The more obvious of the two 1875-S/CC varieties, the presence of the C mintmark to the right of the S is irrefutable. Since the Carson City Mint was in full production in 1875, the overmintmark of a CC reverse die at the Philadelphia Mint was probably performed to provide a die quickly for San Francisco, which made the bulk of export-destined Trade Dollars. This sharp gold-brown and olive-green example is sharply struck with nice luster. A few minute marks define the grade. Census: 3 in 63, 4 finer (10/05).

The striking details are strong on all but the upper portions of the head of Liberty and the upper two stars on each side of the head. Strong mint luster with no obvious abrasions on either side. 1875-S/CC T$1 MS64 Chop Mark PCGS. FS-012.5. Type One Obverse and Reverse. A deep chopmark at 8 o'clock on the reverse affects the obverse border near 10 o'clock. This otherwise carefully preserved near-Gem has booming luster and light tan patina. Well struck aside from Liberty's hair and the D in DOLLAR. Although two 1875-S/CC varieties are known, FS-012.5 is the most obvious since most of the second C in the original mintmark is intact. PCGS has a Registry Set devoted to chopmarked Trade Dollars, and the 1875-S/CC is a key to this specialized series. (PCGS# 7040)
